UPDATE 1-Golf-Mickelson and Bradley put U.S. 6-3 up

Sat Sep 29, 2012 4:35pm BST

* Mickelson and Bradley win third match together

* Give U.S. 6-3 lead over holders Europe (Updates after Mickelson and Bradley win)

By Mark Lamport-Stokes

MEDINAH, Illinois, Sept 29 (Reuters) - Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley drew first blood for the United States with a record equalling 7&6 victory over Englishmen Lee Westwood and Luke Donald in Saturday morning's foursomes at the Ryder Cup.

The in-form American duo won their third match of the week together after Mickelson had struck a brilliant approach to within a foot of the cup at the par-four 12th to put the U.S. 6-3 ahead of holders Europe.

Their margin of victory matched the 7&6 wins earned by Hale Irwin and Tom Kite over Ken Brown and Des Smyth at the 1979 Ryder Cup, and by Paul Azinger and Mark O'Meara over Nick Faldo and David Gilford in 1991.

"We've had so much fun," a smiling Mickelson, playing in a record ninth Ryder Cup for the U.S. this week, told reporters. "The crowd has provided so much energy, and it's brought our best golf out."

Mickelson and Bradley's sizzling form helped spark a fast start by the U.S. who were 5-3 ahead after the first day at Medinah Country Club and went on to grab early leads in all four matches on Saturday.

Though Europe began to mount a fightback in glorious morning sunshine, the U.S. led in one match out on the course, trailed in the second and were all square in the third.

Jim Furyk and Brandt Snedeker were two up on Northern Irishmen Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell after 11 holes while Zach Johnson and Ryder Cup rookie Jason Dufner were all square with Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts and Spaniard Sergio Garcia after 11.

In the top match, Englishmen Justin Rose and Ian Poulter were two up on Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson with five holes to play in a tight, fluctuating battle.

Cup veteran Mickelson and rookie Bradley had triumphed twice together on the first day amid a flurry of fist pumps and high-fives and they continued that sizzling form with five birdies on the front nine.

Bradley, winner of last year's PGA Championship, sank a curling 12-footer to birdie the par-four ninth before furiously pumping his right fist as the crowd erupted in deafening cheers.

The U.S. duo went six up at the 10th before sealing victory with a par at the 12th where the out-of-form Englishmen bogeyed.

Europe, under the captaincy of Jose Maria Olazabal, field one of their strongest ever lineups but face a challenging task to retain the trophy with the U.S. having lost only three times on home soil since the matches began in 1927.

"We do have to change the momentum," Spaniard Olazabal said after his team were outplayed by the Americans on the opening day. "We need to have a great day tomorrow, both morning and afternoon sessions." (Editing by Larry Fine and Julian Linden)

I picked up the iPhone 5 on launch day. It was a fairly painless process, no pre-order, no lines, and no hassle. Call it a benefit of living in a small town or just dumb luck. This was a far cry from some people?s launch day experiences. Here are my thoughts on the iPhone 5 after using it for a week. (Gadgets, iPhone 5, Phones) 8/10

Spare The Rod Spoil The Child...But Not In North Texas

When I first read this story I thought about the theme song for Welcome Back Kotter "Welcome back, your dreams were your ticket out". ?

School administrators will be allowed to paddle students of the opposite sex under a rule approved unanimously Monday night (9-25-12) by the school board in the North Texas community of Springtown.

Superintendent Michael Kelley said Tuesday the new policy would ensure both male and female students are treated equally since there are not enough administrators of both genders in some schools in Springtown, which has a population of about 2,600.

Under the previous policy, corporal punishment could only be carried out by an administrator who was of the same gender as the student. The new policy says that a school official of the same gender as the student must be in the room where the paddling takes place and that parents must provide written permission for their child to be paddled. The punishment involves striking students on their clothed rear with a wooden paddle. ?

And now step back and watch as the machine known as the ACLU gears up for a major assault on this school board and Superintendent....watch and see!

"Well, we?are?political beings. We live in the world; we live in the world of politics. The inner life isn't separate from that. What is the goal of the creativity one feels ? and wishes to develop and help others to develop? Is it just to make more and more pots or take more and more pictures? Is that what it's all about? I don't think so. I think that as we become more creative, we move toward a concern with social justice and compassion. That's the natural movement. We come, maybe through times of loneliness, toward experiencing the reality of another person. As we create, you might say, we are created. We move toward a deepened awareness of reality. Outwardly, we move toward social justice; inwardly we move toward compassion.

"Consider words: more and more I have come to understand that words are non-verbal. Try asking yourself where the words are before you speak them. I think we make a mistake in trying to restrict a word into something that we can read about in a dictionary. A word is a being. Writing becomes a more intimate and inspired activity when you see you're writing out of your substance, out of the mystery."

Genetic sleuthing uncovers deadly new virus in Africa

Friday, September 28, 2012

An isolated outbreak of a deadly disease known as acute hemorrhagic fever, which killed two people and left one gravely ill in the Democratic Republic of Congo in the summer of 2009, was probably caused by a novel virus scientists have never seen before.

Described this week in the open-access journal PLoS Pathogens, the new microbe has been named Bas-Congo virus (BASV) after the province in the southwest corner of the Congo where the three people lived.

It was discovered by an international research consortium that included the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and University of California, Davis (UCD), Global Viral, the Centre International de Recherches M?dicales de Franceville in Gabon, the Institut National de Recherche Biom?dicale, Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Metabiota and others.

"Known viruses, such as Ebola, HIV and influenza, represent just the tip of the microbial iceberg," said Joseph Fair, PhD, a co-author and vice president of Metabiota. "Identifying deadly unknown viruses, such as Bas-Congo virus, gives us a leg up in controlling future outbreaks."

"These are the only three cases known to have occurred, although there could be additional outbreaks from this virus in the future," said Charles Chiu, MD, PhD, an assistant professor of laboratory medicine at UCSF and director of the UCSF-Abbott Viral Diagnostics and Discovery Center, who spearheaded the UCSF effort to identify the virus. Chiu and his team continue to work on new diagnostics to detect the virus so that health officials in Congo and elsewhere can quickly identify it should it emerge again.

One odd characteristic of the Bas-Congo virus, Chiu said, is that while a number of other viruses in Africa also cause deadly outbreaks of acute hemorrhagic fever?Ebola virus, Lassa virus and Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever virus to name a few ?the new virus is unlike any of them.

Genetically it is more closely related to the types of viruses that cause rabies, which are known to infect people with a very different sort of disease?a neurological illness that is uniformly fatal if untreated but may take months to develop.

An antibody test developed in this study was applied to the one patient who survived and to others who had come into contact with him. It suggested that the disease may be spread from person to person but likely originated from some other source, such as an insect or rodent.

The identity of this animal "reservoir" and the precise mode of transmission for the virus remain unclear and are currently being investigated by Metabiota and the central African members of the consortium through the PREDICT Project of USAID's Emerging Pandemic Threats Program.

How the New Virus Emerged

In the summer of 2009, a 15-year old boy in a small rural community called Mangala village suddenly fell ill and developed a bleeding nose, bleeding gums and bloody vomit. He rapidly worsened, dying within three days of the first signs of illness.

A week later, a 13-year old girl who attended the same school and lived in the same neighborhood as the boy came down with a similar, serious illness. She declined just as rapidly and also died within three days. One week after that, the male nurse who cared for this girl began showing the same symptoms, and he was transferred to a hospital in Boma, a nearby port city that sits along the Congo River upstream from Africa's Atlantic coast.

Members of the consortium, who had initiated a project to diagnose unusual cases of severe hemorrhagic fever, obtained blood samples collected from the nurse by the Congolese doctors and sent them to the laboratory of Eric Leroy, PhD, doctor of veterinary medicine at the Centre International de Recherches M?dicales de Franceville in Gabon. There the samples were tested for traces of any known virus, but nothing was found. The Metabiota scientists then solicited the expertise of Chiu at UCSF and Eric Delwart at the Blood Systems Research Institute (BSRI) in San Francisco to aid in the diagnosis.

The researchers ultimately identified a completely new virus as the cause of the mysterious illness through a powerful strategy for identifying novel pathogens known as "deep sequencing," in which millions of DNA sequences are generated from a clinical sample and then pieced together using computer algorithms combined with human analysis.

Distinct Attributes of Bas-Congo

The Bas-Congo virus belongs to a family of viruses known as the rhabdoviruses, a large family of viruses that infect plants, insects and mammals, including humans. The most famous member of this family is the virus that causes rabies. But even among the rhabdoviruses, Bas-Congo is something of an outlier, being very genetically distinct from other members of the family.

What's most unusual about this virus, though, said Chiu, is what it does to people.

No other rhabdoviruses are known to cause the acute, rapid and deadly hemorrhagic fever seen in the three cases in the Congo. Rabies, for instance, can be a deadly disease if untreated, but the course of rabies in humans is nothing like the rapid and deadly onset seen with the Bas-Congo virus. There is some precedent, however, for hemorrhagic disease from rhabdoviruses in the animal kingdom: fish rhabdoviruses are known to cause hemorrhagic septicemia?acute bleeding and death?in affected fish.

The third patient had enormous amounts of BASV in his bloodstream just two days after he fell ill?more than a million copies in every milliliter of blood.

The BASV sequence was also used to design an antibody test for the virus, an effort led by Graham Simmons at the BSRI, another member of the consortium. Antibodies are blood immune proteins produced in response to an infection. The antibody test allowed the researchers to screen both the third patient with acute hemorrhagic fever and other people who had come into contact with the third patient, including the nurse who cared for him in the Boma hospital. High levels of BASV-specific antibodies were found in the third patient, establishing that he indeed had been infected with Bas-Congo virus. The same antibodies were also found in the second nurse, even though he never actually became sick.

"What this suggests is that the disease may be transmissible from person to person?though it's most likely to have originated from some other source," said Nathan Wolfe, PhD, founder and chairman of Global Viral, and a co-author on the paper. "The fact that it belongs to a family of viruses known to infect a wide variety of mammals, insects and other animals means that it may perpetually exist in insect or other 'host' species and was accidentally passed to humans through insect bites or some other means."

Barrow researchers make breakthrough on immune system and brain

In what could be a breakthrough in the treatment of deadly brain tumors, a team of researchers from Barrow Neurological Institute and Arizona State University has discovered that the immune system reacts differently to different types of brain tissue, shedding light on why cancerous brain tumors are so difficult to treat. The large, two-part study, led by Barrow research fellow Sergiy Kushchayev, MD under the guidance of Dr. Mark Preul, Director of Neurosurgery Research, was published in the Sept. 14 issue of Cancer Management and Research. The study explores the effects of immunotherapy on malignant gliomas, cancerous brain tumors that typically have a poor prognosis.

What the researchers discovered was that immune cells of the brain and of the blood exhibit massive rearrangements when interacting with a malignant glioma under treatment. Essentially, the study demonstrates that the complex immune system reacts differently in different brain tissues and different regions of the brain, including tumors.

?This is the first time that researchers have conducted a regional tissue study of the brain and a malignant glioma to show that these immune cells do not aggregate or behave in the same way in their respective areas of the brain,? says Dr. Preul.?

"This means that effective treatment in one area of the brain may not be effective in another area. In fact, it could even cause other regions of the tumor to become worse.?

The results of the study provide important insight into why clinical trials involving immunotherapies on glioma patients may not be working.

Auto Loans With Poor Credit ? What Most ... - Free Finance Articles

While some people may be able to get by without a vehicle, the truth is that most people can?t. To put it in simple terms; if you need an auto then you need a car. Maybe you live somewhere that doesn?t have any public transport, and you certainly can?t be a hermit. You have a job to go to and not having an automobile isn?t an option. But you?ve got an extra concern because your credit isn?t all that great. If so , then you are not alone, however you really can get auto loans with poor credit.

One of the most important factors in what kind of loan it?s easy to get is your credit score. The better your score the better your loan should be. It requires a while for any changes you make to be reflected in your credit report, so you need to start making changes right away. Additionally , if there is any way you can delay buying a auto, it?ll give you more time to get your credit into better shape.

When you have poor credit you pay out more for a loan than someone who has sound credit. Where someone with sound credit may just be able to get an auto loan for 5%, someone with bad credit can expect to pay anywhere from 12% to 25% for a similar loan. Let?s use a $10,000 loan with 60 regular payments to find out how the rates compare. At 5% you?ll pay a grand total of $11,320, but at 12% and 25% that turns into $13,345 and $17,610 respectively. That is the reason why it is so vital to do what you can to boost your credit.

Always recall that it is your money, and that implies it?s your responsibility to manage it sensibly. Hunting around for the best possible loan, regardless of how bad your credit is, is the clever move to do. As you?ve already seen, one or two % points could save you thousands of bucks. Your goal is to get as good of a rate as your are able to. Even though it took you one or two hours to track down the most competitive rate, it might be more than worthwhile.

It should come as no surprise the economy isn?t precisely at its strongest right at this time. The good news is that banks and automobile dealers are mindful of this and are working diligently to help people get auto loans with poor credit. In the past lenders might have laughed you out the door if you had damaged credit, but today they will practically bend right over to work something out for you. if the 1st lender you go to turns you down, then go to another one?and then another?and then another if you have to.

Having damaged credit isn?t any fun, but it does not need to stop you from getting an auto loan. Just make sure that you compare them carefully and read all the fine print. That way you will be able to get an automobile you want at the best possible price.

Greek protest turns violent during general strike

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Police clashed with protesters hurling petrol bombs and bottles in central Athens Wednesday after an anti-government rally called as part of a general strike in Greece turned violent.

Riot police used tear gas and pepper spray against several hundred demonstrators after the violence broke out near the country's parliament. Protesters also set fire to trees in the National Gardens and used hammers to smash paving stones and marble panels to use as missiles against the riot police.

About 50,000 people joined the union-organized march in central Athens on Wednesday, held during a general strike against new austerity measures planned in the crisis-hit country. The action, the first large-scale walk-out since the country's coalition government was formed in June, closed schools and disrupted flights and most services.

Everyone from shopkeepers and pharmacists to teachers, customs workers and car mechanics joined the demonstration, seen as a test of public tolerance for more hardship after two years of harsh spending cuts and tax hikes.

"People, fight, they're drinking your blood," protesters chanted as they banged drums.

As the strike got under way Wednesday, Greece's prime minister and finance minister hammered out a ?11.5 billion ($14.87 billion) package of spending cuts demanded by the country's international lenders.

Greece's politicians have struggled to come up with more austerity measures that would be acceptable to its rescue creditors, with disagreements arising between the three parties that make up the coalition government. The country has been dependent on international loans from other eurozone countries and the International Monetary Fund since mid-2010. Without them, Greece would be forced into a chaotic default on its debts and possibly into an exit from the 17-country bloc that uses the euro.

The country's lenders have demanded more fiscal reforms if they are to continue issuing more rescue payouts. The next payment of ?31 billion hinges on the government agreeing to further cuts.

Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras and Prime Minister Antonis Samaras formulated a deal on the new ?11.5 billion austerity package for 2013-14, along with another ?2 billion in improved tax collection, a finance ministry official said Wednesday morning.

The other two party leaders were to be briefed by Samaras on Thursday, a party official said. Both spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak on the record.

Wednesday's strike shut down the Acropolis, Greece's most famous tourist site, and halted flights for hours. Ferry services were suspended, schools, shops and gas stations were closed and hospitals were functioning on emergency staff.

One of those striking was Athens hospital worker Alkis Betses, who has seen his monthly salary fall from ?1,300 to ?800 (($1,680 to $1,035), says new cuts will bring it down to ?600 ($775).

"How can you survive on 600 a month, with ever-rising taxes, and continue to pay bills and buy necessary supplies?"

Betses said hospitals have been hard hit by spending cuts, with staff shortages and long delays in doctors' overtime pay for night shifts.

"The resentment has been there for long before the new measures. Imagine what will happen when they're made public," he said.

Visa Adding Retail Credit Card Security For 2013 - Business Insider

Visa intends to pave the way for merchant acceptance of EMV credit cards with help from a new data encryption service that launches early next year.

According to company spokeswoman Ellen Richey, the payment platform provider intends to offer a point-to-point security solution that scrambles customer data at the terminal, reducing the likelihood of credit card fraud and identity theft.

Today's magnetic stripe credit cards date back to the late 1960s and early 1970s, a time when the prohibitive cost of processing tools was enough to deter criminals from stealing account data. Therefore, magnetic stripe data passes, "in the clear," from a merchant's card reader into their database, and over phone lines or Internet connections.

Visa's proposed solution eliminates those potential vulnerabilities by encrypting card information from the swipe to the database at the acquiring bank. Merchants get a payment "token" instead of actual cardholder account information, reducing the risk of internal theft. Likewise, a tapped analog phone line or a siphoned Internet connection will only give up useless, scrambled data under Visa's methodology.

P2PE secures future EMV credit cards

The point-to-point encryption network helps merchants comply with existing security regulations, while streamlining the process of accepting next-generation Visa credit and debit cards with embedded EMV chips. The "contactless" version of the EMV standard being adopted among most American merchants passes more information to Visa's network, including a security sequence that retailers can use in "offline mode." P2PE security safeguards this data, minimizing the risk that identity thieves can clone an EMV credit card.

Visa expects minimal impact to merchants during the P2PE rollout. In a statement to reporters, Visa officials confirmed that merchants could mix new terminals with existing payment systems by using a "format preserving" version of the platform during the transition period. Many Visa merchants already face a deadline within the next few years to upgrade their customer-facing payment tools to comply with the industry's EMV acceptance roadmap. Officials promised more details about Payment Card Industry compliance and technical specifications before the service's initial launch in early 2013.

How can humans touch Mars? Bring back a soil sample.

A new report from NASA suggests that the agency prioritize bringing samples back from Mars to Earth for study. NASA will not make a specific plan for how they'll achieve this goal until after the president releases his 2014 budget in February. ?

The next steps in NASA's Mars exploration strategy should build toward returning Martian rocks and dirt to Earth to search for signs of past life, a new report by the space agency's Red Planet planning group finds.

The report, released today (Sept. 25) by the?Mars Program Planning Group?(MPPG), lays out a series of options that NASA could employ to get pieces of the Red Planet in scientists' hands here on Earth. The space agency is now mulling those options and could announce its chosen path by early next year, when the White House releases its proposed budget for fiscal year 2014.

"The first public release of what plans, you know, we definitively have would not be until the president presents that budget to Congress in February of 2013," John Grunsfeld, associate administrator for NASA?s Science Mission Directorate, told reporters today.

NASA put together the MPPG this past March to help?restructure its Mars strategy?in the wake of cuts to the space agency's robotic exploration program.

The MPPG was instructed to consider NASA's newly constrained fiscal situation and the priorities laid out by the U.S. National Research Council's Planetary Decadal Survey, which was released last year. President Barack Obama's directive that the agency get astronauts to the vicinity of?Mars?by the mid-2030s was another factor, NASA officials said.

The MPPG's focus on sample-return should thus come as no surprise. It was a top priority of the Decadal Survey, and sample-return could help spur and work in concert with NASA's plans for human exploration of Mars, Grunsfeld said. [7 Biggest Mysteries of Mars]

"Sample-return?represents the best opportunity to find symmetry technologically between the programs," he said. "Sending a mission to go to Mars and return a sample looks a lot like sending a crew to Mars and returning them safely."

Humans could even be involved in the sample-return process, according to the MPPG report. Astronauts aboard NASA's?Orion capsule, which is currently under development, could intercept the Martian sample in deep space, secure it in a contained environment, and bring it safely down to Earth.

"It is taking advantage of the human architecture, because we anticipate it will be there," Grunsfeld said. "And it potentially solves an issue of, when we return samples, somewhere we have to make sure that the samples are completely contained so there's no chance ? remote as it may be ? that there is something on Mars that could contaminate Earth."

LG Escape (AT&T)

At this moment, AT&T is not lacking for quality smartphones under $100. You can get anything from the LG Nitro HD ?to the HTC One X ?to the Apple iPhone 4S ?for less than a Benjamin. But all of those phones started out with a much higher price, unlike AT&T's latest budget smartphone, the LG Escape, which is available for just $49.99 with a two-year contract.? Thankfully, this affordable price tag doesn't come at the cost of performance or features. The LG Escape has a powerful processor, blazing fast LTE data speeds, a bright, attractive display, and a thin design. Along with our Editors' Choice, the Pantech Flex, it's the model for what a new budget smartphone should look like.

Design, Connectivity, and Call Quality
Attractive in a slim, minimalist way, the Escape measures 4.96 by 2.54 by 0.37 inches (HWD) and weighs just 4.5 ounces. It's made of shiny black plastic with a light pattern printed on the back and a smoked chrome ring around the battery cover and display. The only false note is the textured, matte plastic band around the middle that looks a bit tacky. Otherwise, this looks and feels like a quality device.

The rest of the phone's design is understated as well. There's a volume rocker on the left edge, a Power button on the right, a 3.5mm headphone jack on the top, and a microUSB port on the bottom. That's it. There's about half an inch of bezel on either side of the 4.3-inch, 960-by-540-pixel IPS LCD, which looks beautiful. It gets very bright, and its 256 pixel-per-inch density makes for sharp text and images. The phone is light and comfortable to hold, and typing in both portrait and landscape mode is fast and fluid.

The Escape runs on AT&T's EDGE, HSPA+ 21, and LTE networks, and features 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. Reception is strong, and like most AT&T LTE devices we've tested so far, the Escape pulled in some incredibly fast data speeds, with downloads averaging 18Mbps, and uploads just over 12Mbps. If you take a look at our Fastest Mobile Networks?survey, you'll see that AT&T's LTE can exceed Verizon's LTE speeds, though Verizon's LTE is more consistent and covers more of the nation.

Call quality is mostly good. In my tests, voices sounded a little crackly in the earpiece, with a slight echo in the background, but were otherwise loud and easy to hear. Calls made with the phone are extremely clear, and average noise cancellation helps to block out some, but not all, background noise. Calls sounded great through a Jawbone Era?Bluetooth headset and the stock Android voice dialer worked fine. The speakerphone sounds okay, and is just about loud enough to hear outside. Battery life was average at 6 hours and 27 minutes of talk time.

Processor, Android, and Apps
The dual-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 MSM8960L processor is no slouch. It isn't quite as scorching as the dual-core 1.5GHz S4 in the Samsung Galaxy S III, but it's fast enough to keep all the apps and games you want to play running along at a nice clip. You also don't have to worry about it becoming totally obsolete in the next few months.

The LG Escape is running Android 4.0.4 "Ice Cream Sandwich," along with LG's Optimus UI overlay. It's a fairly light skin, but it makes the phone feel a little more accessible and user-friendly than stock Android. Unfortunately, there's no word on an update to Android 4.1 "Jelly Bean," which seems to be the case for most current Android phones.

Tokyo Jungle

Tokyo Jungle (PS3) Review

It would be wise of anyone who reviews Tokyo Jungle to set the tone by opening with a bizarre occurrence they experienced during their time with the game. Who wouldn?t be immediately hooked or, at the least, intrigued when they hear you can play as a baby chick and stealthily kill a rabbit while it sleeps? Or what about the time I was a gazelle just trying to search for food?I ran into a pack of beagles who wanted to eat me for food, so I double-jumped to safety onto the tops of buildings where I immediately ran into a saber-toothed cat that took a couple swipes and killed me. These happened to me less than an hour into playing Tokyo Jungle. I haven?t even mentioned the moments you experience as a lion or a pig or even a raptor (yes, a raptor). The simple possibility that any of these things can happen should be enough to pique your interest. If not, then read on and maybe I will make a believer out of you.

Stated plainly, Tokyo Jungle places you in the lives of one of dozens of different animals trying to survive a version of Tokyo that has been devoid of humans for years. You won?t immediately know what happened to all of the people, but the game does a good job at slowly revealing details over time. The lack of people has caused all domesticated animals to roam free; even zoo animals have broken free and escaped into the streets. As each animal has its own unique place on the food chain, it is up to you adapt and survive?and surviving is the name of the game in Tokyo Jungle.

Perhaps one of the best things about the game is how intuitive it is to just pick up and play. A brief tutorial introduces the concepts of eating, fighting, sneaking, and mating which all can be accomplished through a few presses of the face buttons. Whether you are a predator that eats other animals or a plant-eating grazer, you must never go hungry or you will slowly lose life and eventually die. However, you must always be on guard because other animals are hunting for food whether it is for your own prey or you. By keeping your distance and hiding in tall grass you will be able to avoid detection and keep safe. Since your animal only has a lifespan of 15 years (each year is about a minute in real-time) you must continue your legacy and gameplay by mating. By eating and leveling up enough you can impress the prime female which will net more children and, in turn, more lives. When starting a new generation some of stats will pass on so you won?t feel completely underpowered. Seem like a lot? It isn?t, especially when you spend some time in survival mode.

Tokyo Jungle

Surviving isn?t as easy as you might think

Survival mode is where you are going to spend the bulk of your time in Tokyo Jungle. In this mode your task is to survive as long as possible racking up survival points. Though you get points for ever year you survive and the amount you eat, the most points will come from challenges. Every time you start a game you are given a certain amount of tasks to complete whether it is to mark multiple territories, start a new generation, or enter a new area. The only way to expand your collection of playable animals is to complete certain challenges in survival mode, giving you plenty of reason to come back and improve. I was surprised at how difficult surviving in this game is?especially when you play as something like a baby chick?because the game doesn?t throw the same challenges or scenarios at you all the time. The map of Tokyo never changes which helps you get acclimated with the world and where the best places are to hide and eat. While you must adapt to the fact that an area that used to be populated with chickens is now full of hyenas, you have the previous knowledge from all your past playthroughs to assist you in the best course of action. You get this sense that with each new death you are getting better and that?s never a bad feeling.

Since no one wants to play the entirety of Tokyo Jungle as a small animal, survival points are used to unlock new animals that you have opened up by completing challenges. All this creates a chain of progression where you build upon your own experience to open up new parts of the game. If that isn?t enough incentive then you can play for high scores so your name will be at the top of online leaderboards; bask in glory as your porcupine did the best out of everyone else?s. One thing I thought would get on my nerves after long periods of play was the music. As it turns out, I began to enjoy it. It shifts between Nine Inch Nails-esque industrial music to some slightly more vibrant electronic/techno beats. There?s going to be people who downright hate it but it truly does fit the atmosphere of a ruined Tokyo.

My biggest complaint about survival mode is that you must play it a lot to unlock every chapter in the story. You do that by finding various archives that slowly explain how and why humans are no longer around. In a way, seeing the story to its end is completely dependent upon how much time you want to invest in going through all the animals and completing a lot of challenges; which in its own right is very time consuming. When digging into the story, however, you are given a charming and hilarious tale from the perspective of different species. There is a lot of fun to be had in experiencing the tale of a pampered dog as it acclimates to a new world. Even a pack?s bloody quest to retake stolen territory is handled with an appropriate amount of care. It is a great strength when the game can not only be funny but sincere without going too overboard in an experience that is inherently over the top. And just in case seeing animals tear each other apart seems a bit too gritty for you, then just dress them up in a tuxedo or straw hat. Yes, there are costumes and pieces of equipment for your animal that not only provide laughs but boosts to your base stats as well. It is a detail like that which makes the game that much better and layered (it?s just too bad the equipment degrades if you take too much damage).

Tokyo Jungle

Up close the game looks very dated

Technically speaking, the game does have some flaws?none of which take away from the experience at all. Let?s just get it out of the way: the graphics aren?t great. They really do look straight out of a PS2 release especially when it comes to the animal models. Yes, the graphics are lacking by today?s standards but it is one of those things that only becomes noticeable close up and is immediately forgotten because you are too busy trying not to become food. Occasionally there will be issues with sneaking due to the somewhat dated and untrustworthy mechanic. Sometimes sleeping enemies will be alerted to your presence when you were sneaking from a distance and they might also be really skilled at detecting you in the cover of grass. Other times a member of your pack might get stuck or a random object or animal will block your way. Despite all this I never encountered anything that broke my game. However there is a particularly annoying loading/saving screen that you have to see whenever you start a new game, die, or even save during survival mode; actually, saving during survival mode will take you right back to the main screen which is puzzling.

Tokyo Jungle is one of the more unique games to come out on PSN in recent memory. For that reason alone it is worth checking out. It excels in all the right places that a game should. It is challenging, but fun with plenty of reason to come back for more. Its dated look could have signaled a disaster but instead PSN users have a game that is intuitive from the start and only gets better. Whether ?animal survival? becomes a new genre or not remains to be seen, but anyone who treats themselves to Tokyo Jungle will be in for something great.

Tokyo Jungle is out exclusively on the Playstation Network on September 25th for $14.99

ESTRELLA D. ALFON - Prolific Filipina Writer from Cebu

ESTRELLA D. ALFON - Prolific Filipina Writer from Cebu (1917-1983)

I'm shining the spotlight on Estrella D. Alfon who was born in Cebu on July 18, 1917.? She was a good friend of another Cebuana writer, Lina Espina-Moore.? Alfon grew up on Espeleta Street near San Nicolas Church, Cebu City. She was only a student when she started getting her fiction published in the Graphic Weekly Magazine, Philippine Magazine, and the Sunday Tribune.

She was in medical school when she was misdiagnosed as having tuberculosis; she left medical school and acquired an AA degree.

When the Alfon family moved to Manila, Estrella became part of the Veronicans, the legendary writers group led by Francisco Arcellana and H.R. Ocampo. She reportedly was the only woman member.

Before World War II, Alfon married Captain Bernardino Rivera; they had five children and ten grandchildren.

Separated from Rivera, Alfon pursued her literary career. She wrote short stories, which Lina Espina-Moore collected, "Stories of Estrella Alfon" Giraffe, 1994. Her stories won awards: the Arena Theater Play Writing Contest, several Palanca Awards, among others.

She was appointed Professor of Creative Writing at the University of the Philippi8nes; she was a member of the UP Writers Club, and? in 1979, she received the National Fellowship in Fiction post at the U.P. Creative Writing Center.

She died on December 28, 1983 from a heart attack.

Baby boomers getting older, Alzheimer's getting worse

News 12 at 11 / Friday, September 21, 2012

EVANS, Ga.-- The disease already affects more than 5,000,000 Americans, but as the baby boomers are getting older, that number is about to rise.

"We need to get it as a country, because if we don't, our healthcare system is probably not set up to care for all the things that are going to happen to the baby boomers that are going to age," said Alzheimer's Association Development Director Dee Dee Kurilla.

They call it the long goodbye. Alzheimer's is the heartless disease that robs you of your mind, and millions of Americans are suffering through it.

"It's the 6th leading cause of death, and there's no cure," Kurilla said.

More than 200,000 of those affected live in Georgia,14,000 of those living in the 17 counties that make up the Augusta region.

Janeabeth Wells' mother is only 69 years old and is already suffering from Early Onset Alzheimer's Disease.

"She does not recognize me as her daughter or her grandchildren so it's pretty difficult. I think the cruelest thing about Alzheimer's is it actually takes the person away from you while they're still physically here," Wells said.

Janeabeth says care taking for her mother is a 24/7 job.

"When she gets up in the morning, it's kind of like having a toddler at home. She does need constant supervision, constant care, we can't leave her alone any longer," Wells explains.

Just last month 80-year-old Effie Lou Parks, who suffers from Alzheimer's, wandered off from her home in Appling. After eight hours of searching, she was finally returned home.

"We just thank God that she's home, and we just urge everybody if you have an Alzheimer's patient or anything, just keep a good eye on them and just protect them as much as you can," her family said.

Her story has a happy ending, but sadly, for most Alzheimer's patients, that's not the case.

With no cure in sight, Janeabeth says coping is about knowledge--understanding the disease-- and love.

"There's no happy ending at all. The only thing you can do is love them," Wells said.

By 2050, the number of people with Alzheimer's in Georgia is expected to triple to as many as 16 million people.

With depressing figures like that, the Alzheimer's Association is trying to spread some hope and knowledge by raising awareness and helping families understand this devastating disease.

They have a pretty high profile event coming up called the Walk to End Alzheimer's and it's on November 3rd.

It's a two to three mile walk that starts at the Augusta Commons.

It helps raise funds and awareness for the disease, but mostly it's about showing the families they're not alone.

Obama, in election mode, tightens his UN diplomacy

President Obama addresses the U.N. General Assembly this week. But with the presidential election approaching,?he won't meet with counterparts, leaving that to Secretary of State Clinton.

He will make time for "The View," a freewheeling TV talk show more likely to reach voters than Obama would with the diplomacy he is skipping at the United Nations.

Just six weeks until the election, the realities and priorities of campaign politics hang prominently over Obama's final turn on the world stage before facing voters.

Unlike his predecessors, he is skipping the face-to-face meetings with counterparts where much of the U.N. works gets done, leaving Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton to pick up more of those sessions herself.

OPINION: Five things international community can do in post-Assad Syria

Obama's itinerary on Monday and Tuesday is compressed so that he can get back to campaigning in some of the most contested states such as Ohio and Virginia.

Obama's address to the U.N. General Assembly, while avoiding any references to Republican rival Mitt Romney, will be viewed in more of an election context by many observers. Those include the more than 130 heads of state and government who are keenly interested in who will be in the White House next year.

Obama's two worlds will collide in his speech Tuesday. He will have a chance to distinguish his world vision from Romney's at a time when foreign crises have intruded in an election focused primarily on the economy.

Obama campaign officials privately welcome the imagery of the president commanding the U.N. stage and making his case about a stronger U.S. position in the world. But the speech is less anticipated this year, seeming also to be squeezed into a pursuit of a second term built more on domestic concerns.

Obama is expected to explain, explore and defend U.S. engagement in the world as anti-American rage has run high in many nations, fueled by an anti-Muslim film that was made in the United States but unconnected to and denounced by Obama's administration.

More than 40 people, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya, have been killed in violence linked to the protests over the film, raising hard questions about the transitions to democracy in the Middle East and North Africa.

The upheaval roiled the presidential campaign when Romney accused Obama's administration of sympathizing with those who attacked U.S. interests.

At the U.N., Obama will try to differentiate himself from Romney by projecting a less aggressive tone toward the world, while also defending America and not seeming like an apologist, said Shibley Telhami, a Middle East scholar and senior fellow at the Brookings Institution.

"That's a tough mix," he said.

The president has previewed his U.N. themes in campaign events, declaring that U.S. will stick with diplomacy but demand returns for Arab partners.

IT'S NOT TV, IT'S AN AFTER-PARTY

Show Bits brings you the 64th annual Primetime Emmy Awards through the eyes of Associated Press journalists. Follow them on Twitter where available with the handles listed after each item.

Everything was coming up roses ? and daisies, lilacs and tulips ? for Julianne Moore at HBO's floral-themed Emmys after-party.

In her bright yellow dress, Moore practically blended in with the colorful decor that covered the floor, walls and tables. The first-time Emmy winner, who portrayed Gov. Sarah Palin in the TV movie "Game Change," held court with her trophy at a table near the party's centerpiece: a circular sofa surrounded by giant faux flowers. She posed for photos with eager attendees ? even when they seemed apprehensive about asking for yet another picture.

"Are you kidding? I'll never get tired of this," she said with a grin before pinning her red locks up in a makeshift bun. "I just wish it wasn't so hot."

Nearby at his own table, "Boardwalk Empire" star Steve Buscemi helped himself to a platter of desserts, including macaroon lollipops. He eventually loosened his tie.

Several HBO stars, including "True Blood" vampire Alex Skarsgard and shape-shifter Sam Trammel, mingled throughout the sprawling soiree held outside the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood. Attendees feasted on such dishes as kale salad, purple roasted potatoes and chicken with gnocchi.

Nicole Kidman, who was nominated alongside Moore for lead actress in a TV movie for "Hemingway & Gellhorn," and her husband, country singer Keith Urban, made a brief appearance at the party, which included a stop to chat with Jane Fonda and Michael J. Fox, before Urban led Kidman out through the massive crowd.

IT'S PARTY TIME

The first stop after the show for most Emmy nominees and winners is the Governors Ball, held at the Los Angeles Convention Center across the street from the Nokia Theatre.

Heidi Klum directed traffic as guests arrived, many stopping to pose for a photo under the dramatic red arch at the entrance.

"Move along, move along," she said.

Among the early arrivals to the party, themed "A Romantic Rhapsody in Red," were Zooey Deschanel, Christina Hendricks, Mayim Bialik and Jon Cryer.

Cryer toted his Emmy in one hand and a glass of red wine in the other, as Hendricks sipped from a cocktail glass and finished dinner.

On the menu: A smoked salmon avocado sphere, roasted tenderloin with mushroom risotto fries and white chocolate raspberry cake.

After the ball, parties around town beckoned. At least half a dozen fetes were planned to celebrate nominees and winners.

COSTNER RECALLS 'MOMENTOUS DAY'

Kevin Costner now has an Emmy to go with the Oscars and Golden Globes that mark a long and successful journey since the day he first told his parents he had decided to become an actor.

That news didn't go down well in his blue-collar Southern California household. His mother was a welfare worker and his father an electrician and later a utility executive.

"My father turned around and said, 'What? How are you going to make a living, how are you going to take care of somebody?" Costner recalled backstage at Sunday's Emmys. "In his mind I was throwing everything away."

He had earned a college degree in marketing and finance, but never wanted to use it.

"There was a moment in time where I knew exactly what I wanted to be and I needed to explain that to my parents," he said, adding it was "a really momentous thing."

NO HOME RUN FOR KIMMEL; CALL IT A TRIPLE

Even with his joking "In Memoriam" self-tribute, Jimmy Kimmel kept this year's Emmycast focused squarely on the Emmys, resisting the urge as host to make the show about himself.

His jokes weren't standout, his comedy bits felt pedestrian. But Kimmel presided in professional style.

And he seemed to have fun ? especially when removing his parents from the auditorium.

He accused them of lying when they told him that if he tried hard enough he could accomplish anything he set his mind to? even win an Emmy.

He didn't win that Emmy on Sunday, so Mom and Dad had to go.

It may have been the funniest moment in the show.

The man who did the honors at Sunday night's Emmy show was Jon Stewart, excitedly accepting his 10th consecutive trophy for best variety series.

He began his acceptance speech by noting that "The Daily Show" deals in topical comedy, "which has the shelf life of egg salad." He added that the Emmy does indicate "The Daily Show" has some value.

In some future age, he went on to say, holding his Emmy aloft, aliens arriving on Earth "will find a box of these."

"And they will know how predictable these (bleeping) things are," he added.

WE'RE OUT OF HERE!

Tina Fey was the first celebrity out of her seat after "Modern Family" won the last Emmy of the night and Jimmy Kimmel threatened to continue the show for another hour.

The "30 Rock" star and several others bolted for the doors closest to the stage, the most direct route to the posh Governors Ball across the street at the LA Convention Center.

Those not invited to the lavish after party had to exit through the back doors.

There was an alternate third route, however, for the last winner of the night.

That's the one the "Modern Family" crew used, winding their way through the pressroom, past the backstage area and into an elevator that held most of them.

"I'm going to latch onto one 'Modern Family' person for the rest of the night," said the show's kid star, Nolan Gould, as he was the last to make it in.

'GAME CHANGE' FOR TOM HANKS

Tom Hanks shakes his hands, perhaps to get a good grip, as he prepares to select his take-home Emmy from the backstage trophy table.

"What do I do?" asks Hanks, who collected a trophy as one of the producers of "Game Change," honored as best miniseries or made-for-TV movie at Sunday's Emmys.

"Now what?" he asks after signing for the trophy. He's directed to a bank of ready photographers.

"Come on Rita, get in here!" A fellow "Game Change" producer shouts to Hanks' wife, Rita Wilson, as flashbulbs pop.

AN EMMY KODAK MOMENT

It's Kodak Moment time backstage at the Emmys, with "The Daily Show" winners taking photos of each other holding their Emmys.

"Do they still ship these if you ask?" inquired the show's head honcho, Jon Stewart.

"Yeah, because I have two children with me," he added, noting the statuette's pointy wings.

But he borrowed a trophy so he could pose for a photo with his writing team. He promised to return it before leaving the theater.

'MANDY PATINKIN, HOLLA!'

Claire Danes came up with the catchphrase of the night when she saluted her "Homeland" co-star during her Emmy acceptance speech thusly: "Mandy Patinkin, holla."

Danes, taking the stage after winning best actress in a drama for the Showtime series, mentioned several names before matter-of-factly calling out Patinkin in the most unexpected way.

Twitter went nuts, with many people suggesting that this saying needs to become a meme, and soon.

As the pop-culture site (at)Gawker put it: "'Mandy Patinkin, holla' is the new Angelina Jolie's leg." From New York Magazine's (at)Vulture site: "'Mandy Patinkin, holla' is the best thank-you ever." And from NPR's (at)nprmonkeysee: "If the Internet doesn't remix 'Mandy Patinkin, holla' by tomorrow morning, it is a failure."

Others suggested that Jewish delis begin baking Mandy Patinkin challah. Still others made references to Patinkin's Broadway bona fides with "Evita" jokes.

If someone can figure out a way to incorporate Patinkin's famous line from "The Princess Bride" ? "Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die" ? then the Internet might truly be worthwhile after all.

'HOMELAND' STAR JOKES ABOUT PLAYING HOUSE

Married actor Damian Lewis joked to reporters that he might be doing some extra celebrating with "Homeland" co-star Claire Danes, who is also married and came to the Emmys with a baby bump.

"We're going away to a romantic island together," the red-headed British actor joked. "When that baby is ginger you guys are going to have a field day."

The comment may have gotten some members of the press too excited, one of whom asked Danes a few moments later how she viewed the win in light of giving birth.

"Thank god I am not giving birth," said Danes, who's in an earlier stage of pregnancy.

The pair reunited later in another backstage area, looking very platonic and like two friends enjoying each other's success.

KIMMEL EVENS THE SCORE

Don't ever cross Jimmy Kimmel.

The Emmy host warmly introduced his parents, who were seated in the audience, and told viewers they had always been supportive of their son.

"They always told me I could do anything I set my mind to," he said, "and this year I set my mind to winning the Emmy.

"And guess what? I didn't," he went on. "You told me I could, and I didn't, and I'm devastated. You lied to me!"

Egged on by Tracy Morgan, who was seated beside them and stated, "I don't trust them," Kimmel summoned security to remove Mom and Dad from the auditorium.

"It's OK if you Taser them if you need to," he told the security men.

DANES PROUD OF OBAMA BEING A FAN

Claire Danes loves that President Barack Obama is a fan of her show "Homeland."

"No pressure," the actress said backstage after her win for lead actress in a drama series at Sunday's Emmy Awards. "It's way cool that he is a fan. It speaks to the relevancy of the show and it's hugely validating.

Obama has said the Showtime series about a Marine returning home after being held as a POW, and who is now suspected by a CIA agent as working for al Qaeda, is his favorite.

TIME FOR A NEW TATTOO

Damian Lewis was so over the moon at winning an Emmy that he says he's thinking of having "Emmy Winner" tattooed on, well, somewhere on the back of his body.

"I'm overwhelmed that I am here!" said the winner of the best actor award for a drama series for "Homeland."

When told backstage that he could have the trophy engraved with his name at the Governors Ball after the show, he contemplated complementing that with body art.

But first he had to sign for his award, and as he did couldn't hold his hands still.

"It's like my grandmother used to write ? all shaky," he said.

"Just tell me what to do," he continued. "I'm out of my mind."

OMG! KIMMEL HIJACKS TWITTER

So this is how time-wasting celebrity rumors get started.

Emmy host Jimmy Kimmel instructed people to go on Twitter and Facebook and write something along the lines of: "OMG, Tracy Morgan just passed out at the Emmys. Turn on ABC right now!" as a prank, just to see how quickly the information would spread (and inspire new viewers). Morgan, who was in on the gag, complied.

And, true to the pack mentality that develops instantaneously on social media, untold thousands of people actually did this. Many others simply read the words "Tracy Morgan" and "passed out" and thought Morgan truly had passed out.

Even Stephen Colbert (at)StephenatHome and Rosie O'Donnell (at)Rosie got in on the action, which prompted thousands more retweets.

Morgan was committed to the act, though: Not only did he lie down on stage, he actually stayed there through the commercial break and was hauled away, rambling to himself.

CRYER IS NOW TOP DOG

The changing of the guard is complete.

Jon Cryer truly was shocked to win an Emmy Sunday in his first outing as a nominee for lead actor in a comedy series.

That category used to belong to Cryer's former "Two and a Half Men" co-star Charlie Sheen. But with Sheen famously dumped from the CBS program, Cryer was elevated to top dog status.

"I will be impossible to live with," he quipped backstage after collecting his award. "I will be brandishing this regularly."

Cryer said he figured Jim Parsons of "The Big Bang Theory" would repeat as the winner.

"Clearly 'Big Bang' is just at the top of its game right now and unfortunately he's not gotten any worse," Cryer said. "I just did not think this was going to happen, so I apologize for my speech."

KAT'S CURVES

It's a happy fact of life for male viewers that "Mad Men" star Christina Hendricks and "Modern Family" star Sofia Vergara are, well, curvy.

And their curves were on ample display at Sunday's night Emmy telecast.

But the night's big surprise: Kat Dennings in a gown that exposed much of what had only been hinted at in her "2 Broke Girls" waitress uniform.

Her bustline had viewers' jaws dropping and tweeters madly tweeting.

NO BOW TIE FOR KEVIN COSTNER

Kevin Costner went against the bow tie fashion trend at this year's Emmy Awards, sporting an open collar look that at least beat the searing heat on the red carpet.

The nominee for lead actor in a miniseries or movie for "Hatfields & McCoys" kept his arm around the waist of wife Christine Baumgartner as he arrived for the show. Asked to describe her gown, Costner said, "I can't wait to go home and close the door."

Stephen Colbert whipped out a blotting paper to make the sweat on his upper lip disappear before facing the throng of TV cameras.

Christine Baranski of "The Good Wife" shimmered under the relentless sunshine in a gold-and-silver sequined short dress. She eschewed a gown, saying she didn't want people stepping on it all night.

"I tried this on and it rocks," she said.

ZOOEY NAILS IT

Zooey Deschanel played up her "adorkable" persona on the Emmy red carpet with a quirky, sparkly manicure featuring television sets on her thumbnails.

The silver, gold and black accessories were a huge hit on Twitter.

A photo of an (at)ZooeyDeschanel digit was retweeted 964 times and favorite 1,135 times as of this writing. They were the work of nail technician Tom Bachik (at)RedCarpetMan.

Glamour Fashion called it "the mani we've been waiting for!" The "New Girl" star, who was a presenter Sunday night, is famous for her red-carpet nail numbers.

A MAD MAN MOMENT IN EMMY LOBBY

It was life imitating art just off to the side of the red carpet outside the Nokia Theatre entrance as "Mad Men" newbie Ben Feldman caught a smoke.

The resourceful first-time nominee discovered a corner tucked away from the scads of cameras and celebrities that was the perfect spot for a quick pre-show cigarette.

Unfortunately, there weren't any bottles of scotch nearby for him to wash it down with, but just inside the lobby of the Nokia Theatre attendees were lined up at the concession stand for $10 cocktails.

Feldman's "Mad Men" leading man Jon Hamm held court on the other side of the lobby, attracting a line of attendees who wanted a photo with the veteran nominee.

MOMS GOT THEIR DUE FROM THE RED CARPET

Moms weren't forgotten on the red carpet.

Rico Rodriguez, young star of "Modern Family," brought his mother as his date, presenting her to the world as "the beautiful ma-ma."

The pair were even featured in a prerecorded bit that tracked their progress in a limo from home to the Emmycast.

And earlier Stephen Colbert, while being interviewed with his wife at his side, took a moment to phone his 91-year-old mom on his cellphone to say hello.

"I've shouted at her 'We're on ABC!'" he told interviewer Josh Elliott.

A RED CARPET PROPOSAL

One Emmy attendee used the red carpet for more than just walking ? he got down on one knee and proposed to his date.

Security initially tried to shoo him off, but saw him reaching into his pocket for a ring and let the moment happen. With throngs of people cheering, he presented the ring and received a kiss, and presumably an answer "Yes," as those nearby applauded the mystery couple.

FROM 1 JIMMY TO ANOTHER

Jimmy Fallon is playing musical chairs at this year's Emmy Awards, in more ways than one.

The 2010 Emmy host, interviewed on the red carpet, noted he has passed hosting duties on to another Jimmy this year, name of Kimmel.

As a result, Fallon said, he doesn't even have a ticket to the 2012 show.

"But Clint Eastwood said he was going to save me a chair," Fallon cracked.

His advice to this year's Jimmy: "Don't make out with Betty White. There's cameras everywhere and you'll get caught. And definitely go to Honey Boo Boo's after-party, cause that's gonna be where it's at."

SEEING STARS ON THE RED CARPET

At the Emmys there's the red carpet and then there's ? well ? the other red carpet.

As the main red carpet fills up, security tries to keep the line moving by directing the big stars down the carpet where cameras are lined up to film them and entertainment journalists are waiting to interview them.

Meantime, the less famous are directed down a parallel red carpet closer to the fan bleachers.

"Please continue walking," security guards continuously say.

Sometimes they'll also give a gentle nudge to someone on the B-list red carpet who lingers too long taking pictures of the folks on the A-List red carpet.

It may take several chants, but the stars often answer with a wave, a smile or the occasional fist pump.

KEEPING COOL IN THE FAN BLEACHERS

Fran and Elmer Armstrong are awards show veterans, joining throngs of fans for at least their sixth Emmy Awards Show on a sweltering Sunday afternoon.

The retired St. Louis couple's quest for a front row seat in the fan bleachers beside the red carpet began when they lined up outside the Nokia Theatre around 7:30 a.m. Sunday. As the day progressed, and temperatures rose, they hung in there, cheering as the cameras from E! Entertainment television filmed pre-show segments.

"Goodbye Giuliana," 70-year-old Elmer Armstrong shouted to anchor Giuliana Rancic as the E Entertainment crew wrapped up.

With temperatures topping 90 degrees, he and his 71-year-old wife were like many in the stands ? trying to keep cool with water and wet paper towels. At least this year's stands are shaded. Elmer Armstrong recalled one year when fans were forced to sit in the blazing sun.

That's not the only change to this year's fan seating ? a tall wall keeps fans from glad-handing or even getting autographs from cooperative celebrities.

Elmer Armstrong remains at the ready, however ? keeping his digital SLR camera and telephoto lens handy to get shots of the stars.
