NHL drafts the wrong players due to birthday bias

Feb. 27, 2013 ? A hockey player's birthday strongly biases how professional teams assess his talent, according to a new study by Grand Valley State University researchers. The findings were published in the online journal PLOS ONE.

The research, led by Robert Deaner, associate professor of psychology at Grand Valley, shows that, on average, National Hockey League (NHL) draftees born between July and December are much more likely than those born in the first three months of the year to have successful careers. In particular, 34 percent of draftees were born in the last six months of the year, but these individuals played 42 percent of the games and scored 44 percent of the points accumulated by those in the study. By contrast, those born in the first three months of the year constituted 36 percent of draftees but only played 28 percent of the games and only scored 25 percent of the points.

The study focused on Canadian players because in Canadian youth ice hockey there is a January 1 cut-off date. This means players born later in the year would have been consistently younger than their age group peers.

"There's no doubt that drafting professional athletes is an inexact science," said Deaner. "Plenty of sure-fire first-round picks fizzle while some late-round picks unexpectedly become stars. But our results show that, at least since 1980, NHL teams have been consistently fooled by players' birthdays or something associated with them. They greatly underestimate the promise of players born in the second half of the year, the ones who have always been relatively younger than their peers. For any given draft slot, relatively younger players are about twice as likely to be successful. So if teams really wanted to win, they should have drafted more of the relatively younger players."

Background and Significance

Previous studies have demonstrated relative age effects (RAEs), which occur when those who are relatively older for their age group are more likely to succeed. For example, in elite Canadian youth ice hockey, roughly 40 percent of players are born in the first three months of the year while only 15 percent are born in the last three months. Although RAEs are well established in many sports and educational settings, their underlying causes remain unclear. The new study provides the most direct evidence yet that selection bias is a crucial cause of RAEs. Selection bias means that evaluators, such as teachers and coaches, grant fewer opportunities to relatively younger individuals than is warranted by their talent.

"There are many possible causes of RAEs," said Deaner. "For instance, a youth coach may mainly select relatively older players because those players' greater size means they are actually more likely to help the team. Researchers believe, however, that selection bias is also a big cause of RAEs, but there has never been a direct test of selection bias. We could make this test because we had a good measure of perceived talent, the order or slot in which each player was drafted. And we had good measures of realized talent, how long they were able to stay in the NHL and how many points they scored there. Because relatively younger players consistently performed better than would be expected based on their draft slots, we've shown selection bias."

The researchers admit that they don't fully understand the selection bias they discovered. "We don't know yet why the evaluations of NHL teams are biased, but there are several ways it could work. Because being many months older than one's peers can be a big advantage as a child or early teen, the relatively older players might be more likely to be on the most elite junior teams when they are 17 or 18, and scouts might be swayed by that," said Deaner. "Another possibility, suggested by educational studies, is an 'underdog' effect. This would involve relatively younger individuals developing better work habits so that they improve more in adulthood."

The authors believe their pro hockey results have implications for education. Deaner noted: "We have to be careful about assuming too much because a teacher deciding which children should be tracked into advanced classes is a much different situation than hockey teams assessing which adults are likely to develop into NHL stars. But, for many reasons, one would think that NHL teams should be less biased than educators. First, NHL teams are evaluating adults not children, meaning that relative age differences are proportionally smaller. Second, NHL teams are aware of RAEs, but educators may not be. Third, NHL teams have vast resources to evaluate individuals while educators do not. Fourth, NHL teams pay a steep price for poor evaluation whereas educators may not. So overall, in many situations, evaluations of ability may be greatly colored by an individual's relative age. This may even happen when the teachers and coaches know about RAEs."

EE rolls out 4G LTE in nine more UK towns and cities

EE SIM

Sole UK 4G LTE carrier EE (Everything Everywhere) has announced that it's switched on 4G coverage in a further nine towns and cities across the country. From today, EE customers in Barnsley, Chorley, Coventry, Newport, Preston, Rotherham, Telford, Walsall and Watford will be able to pick up LTE reception on supporting devices. Four months after it first rolled out 4G, EE's total market count stands at 37.

The network plans to have 4G coverage in 65 towns and cities by the end of June, by which time it may face competition from the other mobile operators. Following the recent wrap-up of the 4G spectrum auction, Three, O2 and Vodafone will be looking to roll out their own LTE services in late spring and early summer.

Green Blog: Mapping a Plague of Frogs

One of the first things that epidemiologists do when studying a new outbreak of disease is to map its occurrence. From there, they try to tease out patterns related to the malady?s cause and prevalence, and begin working on solutions to quell it.

For tracking sick frogs, toads and salamanders, it turns out that the same principle applies. Researchers have assembled an interactive map documenting the global emergence of Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, the amphibian chytrid fungal disease that is blazing through populations of water-dwelling animals around the world. Scientists are still struggling to understand this plague, regarding it as a major threat to the survival of many amphibian species. The research team hopes that the map will bring together fragmented research efforts and present an overarching picture of the problem.

Deanna Olson, a research ecologist at the Forest Service?s Pacific Northwest Research Station in Oregon, and her colleagues are ebullient over their success in assembling a world network of scientists and managers that are interested in conducting real-time surveillance. ?This is allowing us to track what we know about this disease, which has been implicated in mass mortality events as well as some extinctions at the global scale,? she said.

Along with colleagues from Imperial College in London and Oregon State University, Dr. Olson and her lab have developed an online database that currently holds more than 36,000 records of individual animals sampled in over 4,000 sites around the world. Plotting that data geographically allows the team ? or any other interested party ? to see where the fungus is and is not present, and where it has or has not been tested for yet.

Anyone can upload their data to the site, and Dr. Olson?s team updates it annually to make sure it reflects the latest findings in the field. The project, called Bd-Maps, got under way in 2008 and is described this week in the journal PLoS One.

The maps visualize data on both a global and individual country scale. Sampling sites are marked with pins that are color-coded to indicate whether the amphibians tested there turned out to be positive or negative for the disease. This allows scientists and wildlife managers to glean a quick understanding of how their area?s amphibians fare as a whole.

From this data, researchers can also extrapolate the odds of the disease occurring in any given location, and the level of threat that species in those locations may face. (The fungus does not affect all amphibians equally.) ?In some places chytrid fungus is a huge problem, but in other places it doesn?t appear to be such a problem,? Dr. Olson said. ?For example, in the U.S. there has only been a handful of mortality events, but places like Central America and Australia are experiencing a lot of mass mortality and even extinctions.?

The map does have a few potential shortcomings. At this point, the team accepts any data submitted; there is no formal process of standardization or validating that the the data comes from reputable experts. That means that some places could turn up with false positives or false negatives for the disease.

Because the map does include so much data, however, the researchers think it still paints a fairly robust picture of the situation on the ground. The team is also applying lessons learned from this project to create a new, more stringently screened map of the occurrence of ranavirus, another disease that affects amphibians.

Dr. Olson and her colleagues designed the chytrid fungus map as a community tool for others to explore and work with, but the team has uncovered some initial findings on its own. According to their data, 42 percent of 1,240 species sampled worldwide turned up positive for the fungus. There are more than 6,000 species of amphibians, so this means that just 20 percent have been sampled for the disease to date. From the 82 countries sampled so far, 68 percent came back with positive results.

Temperature range stood out as a driver of fungus presence, with places that experience less fluctuation between their hot and cold seasons being more likely to be heavily afflicted by the disease. Dr. Olson hopes that other researchers will investigate whether this large-scale pattern also fits at the local scale.

Already, Bd-Maps is generating interesting collaborations in the field. Dr. Olson said that the map has inspired some researchers to sample new locations in the central United States, for example.

?People have looked at our maps and seen that nobody?s reported on chytrid fungus here or there, then they?ve gone out to do a study to fill in the map,? she said. ?It?s like we?re playing a game of Risk ? we?re always excited to get a new place filled in, especially if it?s in a remote area.?

In other cases, researchers have used the map as a matchmaking service for chytrid fungus aficionados. An Armenian researcher recently used Bd-Maps to reach out for on-the-ground support, for example, and a scientist visiting Papua New Guinea obtained the necessary training to test for chytrid through contacts found though the the site.

?We don?t often see this type of collaboration in the research world, which is classically very much an ivory tower,? Dr. Olson said. ?We?re really excited that our project is being used at the global scale to investigate new hypotheses and patterns emerging from the data by a variety of biologists and managers.?

Secured Personal Loans | Successful Financial Strategy

Personal loans provide borrowers with the opportunity to access funds for those areas in their life that need some assistance or where additional funding would work to their benefit. A secured personal loan is a type of personal loan that involves the borrower having to provide some type of collateral to the lender as assurance that they will repay the loan. This is due to the borrower falling into a high risk category. There are pros and cons to accepting a secured personal loan that we will explore further.

High risk in regard to loan repayment can mean a variety of things. It can mean you have an unsteady income, including self employment where the amount of income you have coming in varies each month. While the lender can see you have an income source, it is not considered to be a reliable as getting a regular paycheck. The decision will depend on the regulations of the lender, length of time you have been self employed, and the loan amount you are requesting.

High risk in terms of a secured personal loan generally imply the borrower has either poor credit or has not established enough of a credit history for a decision to be made. Poor credit can be the result of poor money management or circumstances that took place in your life which you had no control over. Some individuals think it is very unfair to be penalized for not having an established credit history. I agree that it can be frustrating, because you can?t really be expected to establish a credit history if no one will give you credit.

In either situation, use the opportunity of a secured personal loan as a way to prove yourself worthy of lenders working with in the future. Your credit is an area that is going to make or break you down the road, so use your opportunities wisely. A secured personal loan that is repaid as scheduled or sooner can help you on the road to re-establishing your credit worthiness or start your newly documented credit history of to an amazing start. Secured personal loans can offer opportunities to those individuals who would not be eligible for any other types of loans the chance to have the funding they need.

On the flip side, secured personal loans can be risky. It is very crucial that you understand that risk. Since you will be required to provide collateral for the loan, any default could result in you losing your home, other property, vehicle, whatever it was that you used as collateral on the loan. While entering the contract of a secured personal loan, no one really anticipates the loss of their collateral. It can be very damaging to an individual when the lender comes to collect that collateral.

To protect yourself, be realistic with your financial endeavors. You will need to ask yourself some tough questions and be honest with the answers. If you have a pattern of not being able to fully commit to financial obligations, then do not create further financial hardships for yourself or your family by becoming involved with a secured personal loan.

As yourself exactly how much you need to borrow and for what purpose, then stick to those terms. It can be tempting to borrow more when you need $5,000 and the lender tells you that he can approve the loan for $10,000. Don?t let your common sense and judgment be clouded by dollar signs.

Secured personal loans can be a great means of generating necessary revenue for those in need. They offer an opportunity for individuals to establish or re-establish a good credit rating. However, caution should be taken to protect against losing the collateral for this type of loan from being lost to the lender. If you are eligible for an unsecured personal loan, it involves less risk though you will incur a higher interest rate.

Stocks open higher; Barnes & Noble, Hertz jump

(AP) ? Stocks are opening higher on Wall Street Monday following the first weekly decline in the S&P 500 this year.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 75 points, or 0.5 percent, to 14,076, as of 10:02 a.m. EST. The Dow is within 90 points of the record high of 14,164 it reached in October 2007.

The Standard & Poor's 500 gained nine to 1,525 and the Nasdaq composite advanced 22 to 3,184.

Barnes & Noble rose $1, or 8 percent, to $14.64 after founder and chairman Leonard Riggio told the bookseller he is going to try to buy the company's retail business. Hertz advanced $1.36 to $20.07, despite posting a fourth-quarter loss, after the rental car company said that pricing improved, volume rose and it cut costs.

Stocks gained even with the threat of across-the-board automatic government spending cuts less than a week away. Some $85 billion in cuts will occur over the next seven months starting March 1, with more in following years if lawmakers can't come to an agreement on how to reduce spending in a more measured and targeted manner.

The Standard & Poor's 500 had its first weekly decline of the year last week. Investors sent stocks plunging after minutes from the Federal Reserve's latest policy meeting revealed disagreement over how long to keep buying bonds in an effort to boost the economy.

Many analysts say the Fed's bond-buying program and the resulting low interest rates have been a big driver behind this year's stock rally, which lifted indexes to their highest levels since 2007.

Japanese stocks surged on reports that the prime minister's pick for central bank governor will be a strong advocate of loose monetary policy aimed at reviving the moribund economy. The Nikkei 225 gained 2.4 percent to end at 11,662.52

European stocks also advanced.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note, which moves inversely to its price, rose three basis points to 1.96 percent.

Among other stocks making big moves:

? Drugmaker Affymax plunged $13.90, or 85 percent, to $2.54 after the company recalled its anemia drug following severe allergic reactions and the deaths of some kidney dialysis patients.

Sony promising two new PlayStation Vita apps for spring in Friend Network and Imaginstruments

Two PlayStation Vita apps from international waters are making their way to North American Vitas this Spring, Sony announced today. Both Friend Network and Imaginstruments are headed to the PlayStation Network on Vita, and neither was given a price -- each is free in its given country of origin (Japan and Europe, respectively). The former is a social networking app that encourages new relationships (with strangers! gross!) through a variety of minigames, and it stars little known PlayStation mascot Toro. You can also integrate Twitter and Facebook to find real life friends, with the ultimate goal for reaching 100. The latter is a music app that enables some light music composition; think of Imaginstruments as a pared down Korg synth. Take a look at each app in action, just beyond the jump.

China: Remarks from Abe 'mislead the world'

Japanese leader's China-bashing aims to 'seek support from US'
Beijing on Friday criticized hostile comments regarding China made by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe during his visit to Washington. Abe, who was due to hold talks with US President Barack Obama that were expected to focus on a closer alliance, told the Washington Post that China has a "deeply ingrained" need to spar with Japan and other Asian neighbors over territory. The remarks, published on Thursday, provoked a strong protest from Beijing. Abe is keen to attract more attention from Washington by criticizing Beijing, observers said. Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei told a news conference later on Friday that Japan intends to play up the "China threat", mislead world opinion, purposely create regional tensions and has ulterior motives. Lu Yaodong, director of the department of Japanese diplomacy of the Institute of Japanese Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said Tokyo has been "shifting blame to China" and has alleged China was the troublemaker for regional security issues. Abe's remarks came in an attempt to attract more attention from Washington, but "in fact it was Japan who played a role in stirring up the situation in Northeast Asia", Lu said. Beijing urged Japan to take a correct view of China and its development and pursue a "positive policy" with China, according to Hong. Abe has repeatedly emphasized that the relationship with China remains one of the most important for Japan, and that Tokyo will push forward strategic and mutually beneficial relations through an overall perspective, Suga said. China-Japan ties were deadlocked after the Japanese government in September illegally "purchased" part of the Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea. Beijing has since beefed up regular patrols in the waters off the islands. Hiromasa Yonekura, chairman of the Japan Business Federation and an influential industry figure, started a three-day visit to China on Friday, seeking a breakthrough for strained China-Japan ties, Japan's Kyodo News Agency reported. Jiang Xinfeng, an expert on Japanese studies at the PLA Academy of Military Sciences, said Japan has been seeking dual policies toward China, and in light of its friendly posture Japan has persistently escalated confrontations against China regarding the Diaoyu Islands. "Japan has ramped up reconnaissance of the relevant waters and airspace, and has scrambled F-15 fighter jets to follow the China Marine Surveillance aircraft," Jiang said. Tension further flared after Japan spread accusations on Feb 5 that Chinese warships targeted Japanese vessels using fire-control radar. The Chinese Defense Ministry then refuted the accusation and said the media hype was meant to mislead international public opinion. China carries out normal maritime activities in accordance with domestic and international laws, and "freedom and security of navigation in the East China Sea and South China Sea have never been affected", Hong Lei said on Friday. Jiang, at the PLA Academy of Military Science, said a further deterioration, and even a major breakdown in relations, is not a good thing for Japan and is also not within the expectations of the US. During his meeting with Obama, Abe may stress the importance of boosting US-Japan cooperation to contain China's "provocations" regarding the Diaoyu Islands, Japan's Fuji Television reported. At a news briefing on Thursday, White House Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes said the upcoming meeting underscored the importance of the US-Japan alliance as "the foundation of US strategy in Asia". Liu Jiangyong, an expert on Japanese studies at Tsinghua University, said Washington should not let Tokyo hijack the US over the Diaoyu Islands. "It is impossible (for Japan) to establish a strategic order in the Asia-Pacific region that is led by Japan," Liu said. Washington has refused to take a position on the territorial row, though it said the islands fall within the scope of a 1960 US-Japan mutual security treaty.

Pakistan on the verge of defeat against South Africa

CENTURION: A run-out shortly after lunch sparked a collapse as Pakistan slid towards defeat on the third day of the third and final Test against South Africa at SuperSport Park on Saturday.

Pakistan were 187 for seven at tea, still 66 runs short of an innings defeat which would complete a 3-0 series sweep for South Africa.

An early finish seemed in prospect when Pakistan lost four wickets quickly after lunch to be floundering at 114 for six, but Sarfraz Ahmed (27 not out) and Saeed Ajmal (30 not out) batted enterprisingly and with a modicum of luck to put on an unbeaten 62 for the seventh wicket.

Azhar Ali and Imran Farhat defied the South African bowlers for most of a morning during which only the wicket of Younis Khan fell.

They saw Pakistan through to lunch at 87 for two, with Azhar on 27, eked out over 110 balls.

But Azhar did not face another ball before he was run out by a superb throw from fine leg by Dale Steyn after being sent back by Farhat, who had initially been seeking a second run.

Pakistan's hopes of avoiding an innings defeat crumbled as three more wickets fell in quick succession.

Farhat was caught behind, slashing at first innings bowling hero Kyle Abbott for 43 and without addition to the score Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq edged an away-swinger from Rory Kleinveldt to wicketkeeper AB de Villiers.

Asad Shafiq made only six before he drove Kleinveldt to mid-off. But Sarfraz and Ajmal showed spirit in batting through until tea.

FDA approves new targeted breast cancer drug

(AP) ? The Food and Drug Administration has approved a first-of-a-kind breast cancer medication that targets tumor cells while sparing healthy ones.

The drug Kadcyla from Roche combines the established drug Herceptin with a powerful chemotherapy drug and a third chemical linking the medicines together. The chemical keeps the cocktail intact until it binds to a cancer cell, delivering a potent dose of anti-tumor poison.

Cancer researchers say the drug is an important step forward because it delivers more medication while reducing the unpleasant side effects of chemotherapy.

"This antibody goes seeking out the tumor cells, gets internalized and then explodes them from within. So it's very kind and gentle on the patients ? there's no hair loss, no nausea, no vomiting," said Dr. Melody Cobleigh of Rush University Medical Center. "It's a revolutionary way of treating cancer."

Cobleigh helped conduct the key studies of the drug at the Chicago facility.

The FDA approved the new treatment for about 20 percent of breast cancer patients with a form of the disease that is typically more aggressive and less responsive to hormone therapy. These patients have tumors that overproduce a protein known as HER-2. Breast cancer is the second most deadly form of cancer in U.S. women, and is expected to kill more than 39,000 Americans this year, according to the National Cancer Institute.

The approval will help Roche's Genentech unit build on the blockbuster success of Herceptin, which has long dominated the breast cancer marketplace. The drug had sales of roughly $6 billion last year.

Genentech said Friday that Kadcyla will cost $9,800 per month, compared to $4,500 per month for regular Herceptin. The company estimates a full course of Kadcyla, about nine months of medicine, will cost $94,000.

FDA scientists said they approved the drug based on company studies showing Kadcyla delayed the progression of breast cancer by several months. Researchers reported last year that patients treated with the drug lived 9.6 months before death or the spread of their disease, compared with a little more than six months for patients treated with two other standard drugs, Tykerb and Xeloda.

Overall, patients taking Kadcyla lived about 2.6 years, compared with 2 years for patients taking the other drugs.

FDA specifically approved the drug for patients with advanced breast cancer who have already been treated with Herceptin and taxane, a widely used chemotherapy drug.

Kadcyla will carry a boxed warning, the most severe type, alerting doctors and patients that the drug can cause liver toxicity, heart problems and potentially death. The drug can also cause severe birth defects and should not be used by pregnant women.

Kadcyla was co-developed by South San Francisco-based Genentech and ImmunoGen Inc., of Waltham, Mass. ImmunoGen developed the technology that binds the drug ingredients together and is scheduled to receive a $10.5 million payment from Genentech on the FDA decision. The company will also receive additional royalties on the drug's sales.

Shares of ImmunoGen Inc. slipped 8 cents to $14.22 in afternoon trading. They have traded in a 52-wek range of $10.85 to $18.10.

PwC sees more energy M&A activities in region

Home ? business ? PwC sees more energy M&A activities in region

The Nation February 23, 2013 1:00 am

Energy, mining and utilities will be among the most active deal sectors in the coming year, as already seen in 2012. In Thailand, for instance, state-owned PTT Exploration and Production made waves last year when it beat out Royal Dutch Shell to acquire London-listed, Mozambique-focused natural-gas explorer Cove Energy for US$1.9 billion (Bt57 billion).

"Companies in Southeast Asia, including Thailand, are speeding up their global ambitions buoyed by strong growth and robust balance sheets. We expect the trend to persist as more and more companies in this region [Asean] will continue to compete for assets against multinationals or one another," said Somchai Jinnovart, energy, utilities and mining leader and assurance partner at PwC Thailand, citing the report.

The European debt crisis has made many assets cheaper, prompting a change from the conventional strategy of expanding by grabbing more market share at home. As the region's economies mature, some industry-leading companies are running out of growth prospects both in their home countries and in the region, and some need to go farther afield, Somchai explained.

According to the report, although corporate buyer activity is likely to remain subdued in such markets as Japan and Australia, deals in the entire Asia-Pacific region will still be driven by a number of factors. They include an expected revival of an initial public offering by Energy Australia, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hong Kong's China Light and Power (CLP), and the planned privatisation of New South Wales generation assets. Meanwhile Chinese state-owned power companies and Japanese trading houses alike maintain strong mandates for their "go-abroad" strategies, among others.

Somchai said Southeast Asian companies, to a certain extent, also are playing catch-up on acquisitions after years of watching more active nations, including China, Japan and India, go abroad.

"We are entering a different M&A world that is less US- or Euro-centric. Increasingly, Asia-Pacific companies are going abroad to other growth markets or at one another. Some have reached a level of maturity where they're ready to export their capabilities and see this as the time to consolidate their position in other markets," he said.

"While we expect Chinese and Japanese buyers to continue making acquisitions outside the Asia-Pacific region, we see signs that power companies from South Korea, Malaysia and Thailand are also boosting their own 'go abroad' ambitions. This shift to look overseas is driven in part by the forthcoming launch of the Asean Economic Community."

Throughout Asia and the Pacific, transactions totalling $17 billion were announced for power and renewables targets in the last six months of 2012, up 45 per cent from $11.7 billion in the comparable period a year earlier. In contrast, power and utilities M&A activity in the rest of the world saw a sharp decline after staging a recovery in 2010 and 2011 from its post-credit-crunch low in 2009.

"The flow of power and utilities deals in the Asia-Pacific region is bucking the global trend, with their numbers and values in the past six months continuing to rise from their 2011 lows," Somchai said.

"While in the second half of 2012 the value of deal-making for Asia-Pacific targets was up by almost half, deal value in the rest of the globe was actually down 42 per cent year on year over the same period. In fact, the global decline would have been even more significant if it weren't for Asia-Pacific buyers active in other parts of the world."

Cross-border deals

According to PwC's "Asia Pacific Power & Renewables Deals 2013: M&A Outlook and 2012 Review", buyers from the Asia-Pacific region were behind 37 per cent or $8.8 billion worth of the total $23.8 billion of cross-border deals announced globally.

For full-year 2012, Asia-Pacific deals continued to make gains with a total target value of $41.7 billion, a 117-per-cent increase from $19.2 billion in 2011.

The increase of $15.6 billion came from the nationalisation of Japan's Tokyo Electric Power Co and its divestment of its stake in Loy Yang A Power Station in Australia. Both deals were a direct response to the impact of the Fukushima earthquake, the report says.

On a global scale, last year's total deal value in the sector dropped 27 per cent to $154.1 billion compared with 2011 while the number of deals contracted by 15 per cent to 1,014.

"As we enter 2013, the amount of power and renewable target and bidder value coming from the Asia-Pacific region has trebled as a share of annual global sector M&A compared with the same period a year ago. So, as you can see, the region truly is standing out as an M&A powerhouse in an otherwise subdued global market," Somchai said.

According to the report, Australia, Europe and South America were the most attractive targets for global power companies seeking growth.

Looking at sector merger deals in Southeast Asia, Somchai said 2012 was also a year to be remembered, as the region managed to steal some limelight from top contenders such as China and Japan, playing host to some of Asia's biggest mergers and acquisitions.

Canada ambassador says he feels slighted by "Argo"

TORONTO (AP) ? Canada's former ambassador to Iran, who protected Americans at great personal risk during the Iran hostage crisis of 1979, said Friday if "Argo" wins the Oscar for best picture on Sunday there would be something wrong with director Ben Affleck if he didn't mention Canada.

Ken Taylor said he continues to feel slighted by a movie that he says makes Canada look like a meek observer to CIA heroics in the rescue of six U.S. citizens caught in the crisis. He said there would be no movie if the Canadian embassy didn't take in the Americans.

Taylor said if Affleck doesn't say something in his acceptance speech "then it's a further reflection" on him.

"I would hope he would," Taylor said. "But given the events of the last while I'm not necessarily anticipating anything."

Affleck's CIA thriller "Argo" is widely expected to win the best-picture trophy on Sunday.

"In general it makes it seem like the Canadians were just along for the ride. The Canadians were brave. Period," he said.

Taylor noted that Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter appeared on CNN on Thursday night and said "90 percent of the contributions to the ideas and the consummation of the plan was Canadian," but the film "gives almost full credit to the American CIA."

"We took the six in without being asked so it starts there," Taylor said. "And the fact that we got them out with some help from the CIA then that's where the story loses itself. I think Jimmy Carter has it about right, it was 90 percent Canada, 10 percent the CIA."

Arab couple denied medical care in Israel

Beit Safafa resident calls Natali medical services company to order doctor?s visit for feverish husband only to be told ?No doctor will go to an Arab area?

ynet?

Are residents of Arab neighborhood expected to go without medical care due to their place of residence? Natali Seculife, a medical and emergency services company refused to send a physician for a house-call in Beit Safafa, a resident of Jerusalem?s Arab neighborhood said.

A call center representative told the resident that a company doctor will not visit an ?Arab area.?

The incident occurred a week ago, when Sonia Alias, a resident of Beit Safafa, called the service and asked for a house-call for her feverish husband.

The Natali call-center?s representative took Alias? credit card information and told her a doctor will arrive shortly.

After 30 minutes Alias was called by an Arabic speaking representative and asked for an exact address.

According to her, after receiving the address he said: ?I?ll tell you the truth. The doctor here will not agree to go to an Arab area.?

She said the representative suggested she drive her husband to receive the needed care.

?I explained that this isn?t a dangerous neighborhood, I told him that I?ll meet them and take them to my home.

?He suggested I take my husband to a nearby doctor but I explained that he?s feverish, very weak and can?t stand on his feet. He said that they?ll check and get back to me.?

The representative called Alias after an hour and then claimed the doctor has a lot of patients and the wait for the house-call will be longer than three hours.

The couple did not give up. ?I told the representative that I?m willing to wait,? Alias said. ?I said I really want him to come, but the call ended and I didn?t hear back from them until the following morning.?

Waiting, she was distressed: ?I was afraid my husband had swine flu and I was helpless. It?s a man?s life. Just because we live in an Arab neighborhood he doesn?t deserve care? He deserves to die? I called for a doctor, not a car-towing service. This is contempt for human life. It was hurtful, insulting and jarring.?

The next day Alias received a call from a representative. According to her, ?she said that she?s very sorry a doctor wasn?t sent and asked if I?m still interested in a house-call.

?It drove me mad; I scolded her and gave up the service.?

Natali clarified it was a one-time incident: ?An inquiry revealed that the representative who took care of Mrs. Alias? call was operating on his own initiative and not according to the company?s guidelines.

?We?ll study the incident and draw the necessary conclusions.?

It was further stated: ?The company provides medical service to hundreds of thousands of clients equally, regardless of religion, race or gender, and is one of the only companies which provides this service to the Arab neighborhoods in Jerusalem.?

Russia accuses U.S. of double standards over Syria

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian accused the United States of applying double standards over Syria on Friday and blamed Washington for blocking a U.N. Security Council statement condemning a car bomb attack in Damascus.

The car bomb killed 53 people on Thursday on a busy highway, damaging nearby Russian embassy buildings in the Syrian capital.

"We are disappointed that, as a result of the United States' position at the United Nations Security Council, the terrorist act in Syria was not condemned," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told a joint news conference after talks with China's foreign minister.

"We believe this is double standards and see in it a very dangerous tendency by our American colleagues to depart from the fundamental principle of unconditional condemnation of any terrorist act, a principle which secures the unity of the international community in the fight against terrorism.

Russia has used its status as a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council to protect President Bashar al-Assad from three consecutive resolutions aimed at putting pressure on him to end the nearly two-year old conflict.

The United States has pushed for Assad's departure but Moscow says his removal must not be a pre-condition for any solution of the conflict.

The Handful of Countries Without a Minimum Wage

In a surprising move, President Obama proposed during the State of the Union address to increasing the federal minimum wage to $9 an hour. A perpetually controversial issue, the minimum wage remains a flashpoint between progressives and conservatives, with proponents saying it keeps full-time workers out of poverty and opponents arguing it increases unemployment.

As the map above shows, only a handful of countries lack minimum wage laws: Congo, Kenya, Somalia, Pakistan, among a few others. Most countries have a minimum-wage law or agreement. In many cases, those laws guarantee a minimum wage only to workers in certain industries or locations. And many countries with minimum-wage laws struggle to enforce them.

Identify Your "Broken Windows" to Keep Bad Habits in Check

Identify Your "Broken Windows" to Keep Bad Habits in CheckCommon sense dictates that bad habits will eventually catch up to you. However, in a post for Psychology Today, Gretchen Rubin of The Happiness Project suggests that bad habits may also diminish your happiness. Her source? Police work.

Rubin cites the "broken windows theory," which posits that a society that tolerates minor infractions like broken windows will make it more likely for people to commit serious crimes. Therefore, small signs of disorder in our lives?clutter, chronically unmade beds, a lack of pride in one's appearance?can negatively affect happiness.

Does fixing a broken window really matter? After all, in the context of a happy life, a pile of unsorted mail isn't a big deal. In themselves, perhaps, these broken windows don't matter much. But enforcing small signs of order make us feel more in control?and happier.

We've spoken a lot about the benefits of decluttering, but fixing broken windows can extend into other areas of your life. Check out the link for more.

How to kill an asteroid? Get out a paint spray gun

Feb. 21, 2013 ? There is research that is off the wall, some off the charts and some off the planet, such as what a Texas A&M University aerospace and physics professor is exploring. It's a plan to deflect a killer asteroid by using paint, and the science behind it is absolutely rock solid, so to speak, so much so that NASA is getting involved and wants to know much more.

Dave Hyland, professor of physics and astronomy and also a faculty member in the aerospace engineering department at Texas A&M and a researcher with more than 30 years of awards and notable grants, says one possible way to avert an asteroid collision with Earth is by using a process called "tribocharging powder dispensing" -- as in high pressured -- and spreading a thin layer of paint on an approaching asteroid, such as the one named DA14 that came within 17,000 miles on Feb. 15.

What happens is that the paint changes the amount by which the asteroid reflects sunlight, Hyland theorizes, producing a change in what is called the Yarkovski effect (which was discovered by a Russian engineer in 1902). The force arises because on a spinning asteroid, the dusk side is warmer than the dawn side and emits more thermal photons, each photon carrying a small momentum. The unequal heating of the asteroid results in a net force strong enough to cause the asteroid to shift from its current orbit, Hyland further theorizes.

The kind of paint used is not the kind found at your local hardware store, Hyland explains.

"It could not be a water-based or oil-based paint because it would probably explode within seconds of it entering space," he notes.

"But a powdered form of paint could be used to dust on the asteroid and the sun would then do the rest. It cures the paint to give a smooth coating, and would change the unequal heating of the asteroid so that it would be forced off its current path and placed on either a higher or lower orbit, thus missing Earth.

"I have to admit the concept does sound strange, but the odds are very high that such a plan would be successful and would be relatively inexpensive. The science behind the theory is sound. We need to test it in space."

As for getting the paint on the asteroid, a practical way to do this was discovered by a former student of Hyland's, Shen Ge, who has since started a new space company. The "tribocharging powder dispenser" would spray a mixture of inert gas and charged dry-paint powder at the asteroid that would attract the powder to its surface through electrostatics. Then solar wind and UV radiation would cure the powder, giving a smooth, thin coat on the surface.

Getting the paint in the asteroid's path in a timely manner will certainly be a challenge, Hyland observes.

"The tribocharged powder process is a widely used method of painting many products," he says. "It remains only to adapt the technology to space conditions."

NASA has approached Hyland for developing such a project to test the theory, and Earth may need it quickly. An asteroid called Apophis is due in 2029 and will come closer than many communications satellites in orbit right now. It will fly by on April 13 (Friday the 13 to be exact) of 2029 and make a return trip in 2036, and it's estimated to be more than 1,000 feet in length and is appropriately named for an evil Egyptian god of chaos and destruction. There is no chance of its hitting Earth in 2029, but a small chance in the next close approach in 2036, Hyland notes.

Asteroids have hit Earth before. One hit off the Yucatan coast of Mexico about 65 million years ago and is believed to have caused the eventual extinction of the dinosaurs. And in 1908, the fabled "Tunguska event" occurred in Siberia in which an asteroid or meteor exploded several miles above? Earth, flattening trees and killing livestock over 800 square miles. The explosion is now estimated to have been 1,000 times more powerful than the A-bomb dropped on Hiroshima.

"There are thousands of asteroids out there, and only a small percentage of them are known and can be tracked as they approach Earth," Hyland adds.

"The smaller ones, like DA14 are not discovered as soon as others, and they could still cause a lot of damage should they hit Earth. It is really important for our long-term survival that we concentrate much more effort discovering and tracking them, and developing as many useful technologies as possible for deflecting them."
