Another Somali journalist killed, 18th this year

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) ? Journalists in Somalia's capital say gunmen have targeted and killed another media worker, bringing the number of Somali journalists killed this year to 18.

Warsame Shire Awale, who worked at a Mogadishu radio station, was shot dead by two men near his home late Monday. Sharmarke Abukar Amin, a colleague who confirmed the death, said journalists in Somalia are being killed only because of their professional identity.

Awale, a veteran poet and playwright, was known for composing dramas and songs for bands and radio stations.

The National Union of Somali Journalists said Awale had been receiving threats because of comments he made on air about gunmen targeting civilians. The union said Awale was killed Monday night.

No arrests have been made in any of the 18 media killings this year.

How To Pick The Right Distance Education University : Reference

You are here: Home / General / How To Pick The Right Distance Education University

What can be more interesting in the field of education these days but distance education. Its demand is undoubtedly related to the ability of technology to enhance its effectiveness and efficiency. The benefits that students derive from distance education with the help of technologies are enough reasons for its appeal. The popularity of distance education is motivating many schools to feed the demand which confuses the students as to which distance education university to enroll.

The process of choosing the distance education university is a definite concern for all the millions of prospective students around the world. In the same way these institutions are screening applicants for qualifications; interested students must also do some screening of potential universities to know what one is getting into.

So, what can a student do to know if the prospective distance education university measures up to one?s expectations and standards?

*It is best to firm up decision first as to what skills program or degree program one is interested to pursue. One must remember that one has another choice which is referred to as the open university concept. These are known to practice an open-door policy. These universities accept students without any particular academic qualification needed to be admitted into skill training and enrichment programs. Choosing a school becomes easy when one knows what is wanted.

*All schools are known for something which is like a brand they carry. Being familiar with such can further help in streamlining choice. Pick out those schools which are notables in your chosen field. A school with a good standard will never fail to make students feel confident.

*Take time to know about the school just like how you get to know a conventional school ? their entrance and admission policies, tuition fee rates, retention policies, prerequisites, mode of teaching and course offerings. These can easily be learned by accessing their websites.

*Find out from those who enrolled in the years past their experiences to earn firsthand knowledge useful in making decisions. This is like looking at your future if said school becomes your choice. Making the right choice saves money, effort, and time.

The quality of education one may get in any school is always a reflection of the standards of the school. This puts logic to the question: What distance education university is most ideal for me?

Durable orders show business investment still weak

WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. companies remained cautious in September and held back on orders for long-lasting manufactured goods that signal investment plans. Weak business investment has contributed to slower economic growth.

The Commerce Department said Thursday that orders for durable goods jumped 9.9 a percent last month. While it was the biggest gain in nearly three years, most of the September gain was driven by a tremendous spike in aircraft orders, which are very volatile and plummeted in the previous month.

When taking out transportation, orders rose just 2 percent. And demand for core capital goods, such as machinery and equipment, were unchanged in September. Core capital goods are considered a proxy for business investment plans. Those orders rose only slightly in August after steep declines in July and June.

Peter Newland, an economist at Barclays, said the report "painted a soft picture of business demand" in the July-September quarter. He said the weakness had prompted him to trim his estimate for economic growth in the quarter from 2 percent down to 1.8 percent.

Durable goods are products expected to last at least three years. Orders can fluctuate sharply from month to month.

Demand is sharply lower this year, which has weakened manufacturing and hampered economic growth. High unemployment and low pay have kept consumers from spending. Businesses have held back on investing in machinery and equipment. And slower global growth has dampened demand for U.S. exports.

Economists are concerned that businesses could pull back further if Congress doesn't reach an agreement to avert steep tax hikes and government spending cuts scheduled to take effect in January.

There is some indication that U.S. factory activity could be improving. A closely watched survey from the Institute for Supply Management, said manufacturing grew in September for the first time in four months. It was buoyed by a jump in new orders.

Americans also boosted their spending at retail businesses in September, buying more cars, appliances and furniture. Stronger consumer spending could help offset declining demand from overseas.

Still, the decline in U.S. manufacturing has slowed job growth. Manufacturing employment dropped by 16,000 in September after falling by 22,000 in August.

The weak job market has been a key topic in this year's presidential election, which is down to its final days. Voters will have one final employment report to consider, which comes out four days before Election Day.

The economy is not growing fast enough to generate much hiring. Growth slowed to a tepid annual rate of 1.3 percent in the April-June quarter, down from 2 percent in the previous quarter. Most economists see growth staying at or below 2 percent in the second half of the year. The Commerce Department will issue its first estimate of growth in the July-September quarter on Friday.

Brainstorming on brain cancer: why histones are so important ...

Why are most brain cancers so difficult to treat leaving the unfortunate patients who suffer from them in dire circumstances so often?

The short answer is that we don?t know why.

This lack of understanding is like a wall standing between the cures and us for these patients.

We have to climb or knockdown this wall.

Brain cancers are a diverse group, but lessons about one or more types can sometimes teach us about others. There may also be patterns that transcend different types of brain tumors and may even include other kinds of cancers as well.

What are some established patterns that are at work in many kinds of brain tumors and indeed other tumors?

  • Faulty DNA repair
  • Impaired apoptosis
  • Abnormally active or inactive signaling pathways
  • Altered cellular metabolism
  • Cell cycle

A relatively newer, but intriguing pattern emerging is related to a type of protein called histones.

What are histones?

Histones are DNA binding proteins that basically allow the cell to obtain information from the DNA. The presence or absence of histones has profound consequences for how DNA ?talks? to cell behaviors. In addition histones are post-translationally modified (e.g. methylated, acetylated, phosphorylated, etc etc) in many ways creating a ?code? that also influences DNA functions ranging from gene transcription to chromatin structure to chromosome segregation. All of these things operate like a histone-dependent machine in normal cells that controls most aspects of cell behavior via translating the information in DNA into a ?language? that the cellular machinery can understand.

An emerging concept in the brain cancer field as well as in the study of other tumors is that monkey wrenches in histones also contribute to cancer.

histone methylation medulloblastomaWhile histones have been known for a long time to be associated with cancer, only recently have we obtained a clearer understanding of the specifics, although may open questions remain. In the case of a tumor that arises in the back of the brain in the cerebellum in children called ?medulloblastoma? a seminal 2009 paper from Michael Taylor?s awesome lab provided evidence of convergent histone methylation pathways altered in medulloblastoma (see table above from their paper outlines these convergent genetic events). There are many other papers on the role of histones and epigenetics more broadly in cancer.

Just this year histones were implicated in brain cancer at another level with a handful of very exciting papers on the role of an interest histone variant called H3.3 in glioblastoma, the most deadly of brain cancers (see below).

histone H3.3

The papers indicate that histone H3.3 is mutated on specific residues preferentially in pediatric glioblastoma. The molecular mechanisms involved are still being worked out, but this is a fascinating development.

Taken more generally, these studies and so many more raise the possibility of an even larger scale convergence of cancerous events that involve histones in brain cancer and in many other cancers.?

Meteorologist: supersonic skydive 'a go' on Sunday

(AP) ? The weekend weather in New Mexico appears to be cooperating this time for a daredevil trying to become the first skydiver to break the sound barrier.

Meteorologist Don Day said the weather forecast remained favorable for former Austrian paratrooper Felix Baumgartner's jump, scheduled for early Sunday near Roswell, N.M.

Baumgartner will be prepared at sunrise to launch his 30 million cubic foot helium balloon to hoist a 3,000-pound capsule that will carry the jumper 23 miles up in the sky. The jump has already been canceled twice due to high winds, once damaging the balloon and forcing use of a backup for Sunday's planned launch.

Baumgartner will try to break a 1960 high-altitude parachuting record. He will also test a pressurized suit that is designed for stratospheric jumps.

He called Tuesday's postponement nerve-wracking but said Sunday's date is one already steeped in aviation history. On October 14, 1947, an experimental rocket plane Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier for the first time over Edwards Air Force Base in California.

"I want to break the speed of sound, no matter what it takes," he said in a statement. "As long as we have a spare balloon and more launch days, I'm good."

'SNL' parodies VP debate with help from Usain Bolt

(AP) ? "Saturday Night Live" parodied the vice presidential debate with a little help from the world's fastest man.

Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt dropped by the NBC sketch show's mock debate after Taran Killam, playing Mitt Romney's running mate, Paul Ryan, claimed he won the 100-meter race at the London Olympics. Ryan has been criticized for exaggerating his marathon time.

"SNL" had fun with the vice president candidates following Thursday's contentious debate. While President Barack Obama and Romney's first debate didn't offer as much obvious satire, the show happily skewered Vice President Joe Biden and Ryan.

Jason Sudeikis, as Biden, called himself "Big Daddy Joe" and insisted he was "monkey strong" unlike his younger foe, whom he referred to as "shark eyes." Killam played Ryan with an Eddie Munster-like widow's peak.

Chinese Private Enterprises: Business Partners or Security Risks ...

This week, the U.S. House of Representatives? Permanent Committee on Intelligence published a report on the activities of two Chinese telecommunications companies ? Huawei Technologies Company and ZTE.? The report generated widespread media coverage given its conclusions that the two posed a potential threat to U.S. national security.? This will have significant implications for companies that do business with China while also counting the U.S. government as a customer.

In investigating Huawei and ZTE, the Committee contended that both companies failed to counter criticisms that they engaged in industrial espionage and other threatening behaviour on China?s behalf. ?In light of such perceived risks, the Committee recommended that U.S. companies should consider working with alternate partners on projects.? Within a day of the report?s publication, Cisco Systems reportedly ended a seven-year partnership with ZTE.? It is not unreasonable to expect that other companies may take similar action in the coming weeks and months and that considerable political or media pressure could be brought to bear on those that do not do so of their own volition.

Companies and investors will recognise that there are risks inherent in doing business with national governments or state-owned enterprises.? Close relationships between multinational companies and foreign governments have generated controversy in the past.? Actions taken by a government that lead to widespread criticism in the international community can result in guilt by association for the foreign investors that do business with them.? What is remarkable about this report, however, is that it focuses on engagement with privately-held companies that have long been seen as examples of China?s economic transformation.? Moreover, Huawei requested the investigation itself in the hopes that the findings would exonerate it in the eyes of the U.S. political establishment.

In countries such as China, the distinction between state and private enterprise is often opaque. The Intelligence Committee crticised both companies? lack of disclosure about relationships with China?s government and its Communist Party.? Huawei and ZTE countered that they were already subject to securities law disclosure requirements and that further disclosures were restricted by China?s national security laws.? It is difficult to see how foreign businesses seeking to partner with entities such as these would secure any greater level of disclosure in their own private due diligence.

On the other hand, much of the critical detail underlying allegations against Huawei and ZTE is contained in a classified annex to the report that was not published.? Critics of the report contend that this allows the potential risks posed to be over-inflated for political purposes.? However, that still does not provide a solution for U.S. companies that are trying to determine the balance between the benefits of working with firms such as these and protecting their domestic revenues and reputation.?

This problem is not likely to disappear any time soon as the public-private relationship in China will remain complex and the issue of China?s intentions toward the U.S. will remain the subject of considerable bipartisan political concern.? This matter, however, is of importance not only to U.S. companies but to those from other jurisdictions that seek to participate in the U.S. government?s substantial procurement programs.? So long as political attention continues to focus on the activities not only of Chinese state-owned enterprises but of private Chinese companies as well, business will need to strike a delicate balance between taking advantage of opportunities presented by Chinese growth while not falling afoul of its political undertones in the west.

Soccer-Saudis out to bury qualification demons

Oct 12 (Reuters) - Desperate to regain their seat at the top of Asian soccer, Saudi Arabia say they will be taking nothing for granted as they switch their focus from the World Cup to the AFC Asian Cup.

Eliminated early from qualification for Brazil 2014, the Saudis have now been grouped with Iraq, China and Indonesia for qualification for the 2015 Asian Cup, to be held in Australia.

"Our group is not that much easy, but at the same time it is not completely difficult," Saudi coach Frank Rijkaard said.

Expanding on the riddle, the former Barcelona coach added: "We are looking to take a ticket for the finals from this group, as we want to regain our place in the elite of Asian football."

Saudi Arabia Football Federation's national team committee chairman Muhammed Al Meshel hopes these qualifiers will provide an opportunity to put right errors in committed in the latest World Cup qualifying campaign.

Saudi will miss out on Brazil 2014, after exiting qualifying after the third round with only one win - over Thailand - in six matches.

"Our group is very difficult as we will face teams like Iraq and China, but we want to regain what we lost after our exit from the World Cup third qualifying round," Al Meshel told the Asian Football Confederation website.

"The most important lesson we learnt from World Cup qualifying is not to underestimate any group, and I re-confirm that our group is the strongest."

The West Asians will host China in their Asian Cup qualifying opening match on Feb. 6, 2013. (Writing by Ossian Shine in Singapore. Editing by Patrick Johnston)

Things aren?t going well this year for the Packers, and it?s creating frustration.? Which is leading to guys saying things that maybe they shouldn?t be saying.

The latest guy to let his frustration become verbalized is tight end Jermichael Finley.? Amid yet another disappointing season for the player who has plenty of potential, Finley blames his lack of production on an absence of chemistry with the team?s quarterback.

?It?s OK,? Finley said earlier this week, via Paul Imig of FOXSportsWisconsin.com.? ?Not good enough at all.? Something to be worked on, and try to work on it as much as I can, try to talk to him as much as I can, but like I said, it takes two people. . . .? I need the quarterback on my side, and I need to catch the ball when he throws it to me. So it takes two things to get that going, the chemistry. I feel we need to get that going.?

Imig notes that Finley used the ?C? word during the offseason.? ?I?m not blaming it on my offseason, but me and the QB didn?t have chemistry,? Finley said in June, after a minicamp practice. ?The routes were off sometimes, and that?ll mess with your head when the ball comes. . . .? I couldn?t get the chemistry with the QB.?

Imig also points out that, in August, Finley suggested that his numbers are a direct result of not being thrown the ball enough.? ?With my ability and what I think I can do, I?d say top two, that?s my goal,? Finley said. ?Those guys [Rob Gronkowski and Jimmy Graham] did have that one hit this year when they were rolling and hot, and they had the chemistry going and their quarterback?s trust. . . . [Tom Brady and Drew Brees] threw them the ball 20 times a game. You get the ball 20 times and you catch 10 of them, you should be doing something.?

(Jermichael, if you get the ball 20 times and you catch only 10 of them, your butt will be on the bench, with someone who can catch more than half the passes thrown his way playing instead.)

In an apparent effort to build that chemistry with Rodgers, Finley clumsily threw a bouquet to Rogers on Wednesday, after Rodgers admitted he isn?t playing as well as last year.? ?I would say, first of all, that?s a leader taking the blame on himself,? Finley said. ?That?s what you?re supposed to do as a player, like I would say it?s on me.? So you?ve got to check yourself.? I think that?s leadership.?

And that?s where Finley should have stopped.

?I think he?s playing good, but like I said, this is a team sport, and it?s going to take all 11 of us on the field when he?s on the field with us.? I don?t put it all on him.? It?s his receiving corps, we?re dropping balls; it?s his linemen not blocking for him.? He?s got a lot to think about.? I would be scared, too, if I was getting hit like that.?

So, yeah, Finley ultimately said Rodgers isn?t playing as well in part because Rodgers is scared.

And Finley wonders why he doesn?t have chemistry with Rodgers.

Motorola starting Droid Bionic Ice Cream Sandwich soak test

    Android Central

Some folks have sent emails into Droid-Life indicating that they've been contacted by Motorola to participate in a "soak test" for an Ice Cream Sandwich update on their Droid Bionic. If you haven't seen this go down before, Motorola likes to try and slowly offer an update to specific users to test out before pushing it to the rest of users. It's probably a good strategy in case there are any last-minute bugs, but hopefully it won't be too long of a process.

Motorola has backpedaled a bit in their commitment to update the Bionic to Ice Cream Sandwich in the past, but this will be a good way to make amends with the loyal Bionic owners.

4 Key Points on Cloud Computing | The Blog Herald

    IBM Cloud Computing

Cloud computing is truly the tech du jour among business enterprises, but this tech buzz word is no passing fad, its gearing up to be that floating behemoth of data that?s here to stay. You?d be surprise to know that you?ve been using cloud-based services for quite some time now with Gmail, Google Docs and Dropbox. And with that realization, do you now understand the convenience of the Cloud?

As more company data and materials go on the cloud and away from any physical server at the office,

you can count on productivity and customer service to get a boost, as data can be accessed on demand

and traded among shared groups and even further improved on through customization. Well, you can think of Cloud computing in terms of the way a busy airport operates and with it comes its very own 4Cs- Capacity, Continuity, Checkpoints and Chokepoints.

    Capacity
Airports are adequately designed to cope with an onslaught of passengers and cargo at any given time. The same can be said of Cloud servers. There?s great planning and architecture involved in building an application on the cloud. Though most cloud-based systems don?t usually reside in one giant resource pool, it?s actually spread across remote sites such as public clouds and internal mini clouds, but when pulled together they form a customized, finely-tuned business application that can even be release within a company?s very own firewall. Cloud-based servers can provide common access to tons of critical data and sync content across multiple platforms, making workflows a whole lot easier.

    Chokepoints
Air traffic controllers direct the flow and clearances of aircrafts making sure they stay apart at safe distances. The Cloud has the same kind of controlled environment, open to monitoring vulnerable spots and filtering user groups, only letting the necessary data and services run freely.

    Continuity
Regardless of the weather or any natural disaster, an airport?s facilities keep their services open for travellers. Nothing slows down, business goes on, this is what happens in the cloud when disaster strikes and data recovery is set into play. The cloud enables companies to restore their data in less than a day or in just a matter of hours, critical data can be accessed via any portable device from any remote site. So in case of a natural disaster like fires and floods, or hardware failure or even a virus attack, a quick recovery strategy is feasible, business operations need not go down.

    Checkpoints
Traditional infrastructure security measures may not hold the fort well enough with Cloud servers,

but security has always been a given concern with any virtual environment. But that doesn?t mean you

can?t add an extra layer of protection and beef up security on the Cloud, you can deploy specific security measures across your network to expose threats and inspect moving traffic. It may be a challenge, but the Cloud can weed out viruses and spam to counter distributed denial of service attacks attempting to shut down any key servers.

The author is a Cloud migration advocate who thinks ProfitBricks dedicated virtual server hosting is a good starting point to scale up.

Vinyl Flooring Prices - How to Estimate Cost | Improvement Home

When it comes to computing for vinyl flooring prices, it is important to remember that the cost of vinyl tiles or sheets is not the only thing that you need to consider. There are other costs involved in laying vinyl flooring.

For instance, you need to take into consideration labor expenses just in case you do not want to do your own vinyl floor or you need to hire someone to remove your old tiles, carpets or other flooring materials before you can start laying vinyl flooring. Read on to learn important tips on how you can estimate the costs when you change your flooring to vinyl.

The first thing that you need to consider, when thinking of the cost of your vinyl flooring is the price of tiles or sheets. The price of each tile will depend on its size as well as design and quality. Most common vinyl tiles are 18 by 18 and 12 by 12 inches. If you plan to change a huge area, you can also opt to use vinyl sheets, which can either be 12 or 6 feet wide. If you are really on a tight budget, there are vinyl tiles.

Vinyl Flooring Prices - How to Estimate Cost

However, if you want to make sure that the quality and design will last a long time, you might want to invest in vinyl sheets or tiles that cost around to per square foot. So, if you plan to renovate your 10-by-20-foot kitchen, for example, you will have to shell out 0 to ,000 for vinyl tiles or sheets.

Aside from the tiles or sheets, you also need to include the cost of labor when estimating your vinyl flooring prices. For simple projects, the cost of vinyl installation can be about per square foot. There are also vinyl flooring suppliers who offer free installation, so you might want to inquire about that.

However, if your sub-floor surface has problems and needs to be smoothed out before the installation of vinyl materials, you should expect higher fees. Be sure to ask several installers so you can compare their fees.

Another thing that you need to consider when computing for vinyl flooring expense is the price of vinyl adhesives.

Although there are vinyl tiles or sheets that are self-adhesive, you may still buy special vinyl adhesives to ensure that the vinyl tiles in areas that have high foot traffic will not easily peel off. The prices of vinyl adhesives can range from to .

DNA confirms genetically distinct lion population for Ethiopia

ScienceDaily (Oct. 11, 2012) ? A team of international researchers has provided the first comprehensive DNA evidence that the Addis Ababa lion in Ethiopia is genetically unique and is urging immediate conservation action to preserve this vulnerable lion population.

While it has long been noted that some lions in Ethiopia have a large, dark mane, extending from the head, neck and chest to the belly, as well as being smaller and more compact than other lions, it was not known until now if these lions represent a genetically distinct population.

The team of researchers, led by the University of York, UK, and the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, Germany, has shown that captive lions at the Addis Ababa Zoo in Ethiopia are, in fact, genetically distinct from all lion populations for which comparative data exists, both in Africa and Asia.

The researchers compared DNA samples from 15 Addis Ababa Zoo lions (eight males and seven females) to lion breeds in the wild. The results of the study, which also involved researchers from Leipzig Zoo and the Universities of Durham and Oxford, UK, are published in the European Journal of Wildlife Research.

Principal Investigator Professor Michi Hofreiter, of the Department of Biology at the University of York, said: "To our knowledge, the males at Addis Ababa Zoo are the last existing lions to possess this distinctive mane. Both microsatellite and mitochondrial DNA data suggest the zoo lions are genetically distinct from all existing lion populations for which comparative data exist.

"We therefore believe the Addis Ababa lions should be treated as a distinct conservation management unit and are urging immediate conservation actions, including a captive breeding programme, to preserve this unique lion population."

The lion (Panthera leo) is the principal terrestrial predator in Africa and therefore a key species of the savannah ecosystem. Lion numbers are in serious decline and two significant populations of lion -- the North African Barbary lions and the South African Cape lions have already become extinct in the wild.

One of the regions with a declining lion population is Ethiopia. In addition to a few hundred wild lions scattered throughout the country, 20 lions are kept in the Addis Ababa Zoo. These lions belonged to the collection of the late emperor of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie. He established the zoo in 1948 and the seven founder lions (five males and two females) are claimed to have been captured in south-western Ethiopia, although their geographical origin is controversial.

In their study, the team of researchers recommend establishing a captive breeding programme as a first step towards conserving this unique lion population.

Lead author Susann Bruche, now with Imperial College London, but who conducted the research with the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, said: "A great amount of genetic diversity in lions has most likely already been lost, largely due to human influences. Every effort should be made to preserve as much of the lion's genetic heritage as possible. We hope field surveys will identify wild relatives of the unique Addis Ababa Zoo lions in the future, but conserving the captive population is a crucial first step. Our results show that these zoo lions harbour sufficient genetic diversity to warrant a captive breeding programme."

It has previously been suggested that no lions comparable to those at Addis Ababa Zoo still exist in the wild, mainly due to hunting for their mane. However, the researchers say that according to the Ethiopian authorities, lions with a similar appearance to those at Addis Ababa Zoo still exist in the east and north-east of the country, notably in the Babille Elephant Sanctuary near Harar and southwards to Hararghe. These regions, the researchers say, should be prioritised for field surveys.

Professor Hofreiter said: "A key question is which wild population did the zoo lions originate from and whether this wild population still exists; this would obviously make it a priority for conservation. What is clear is that these lions did not originate in the zoo, but come from somewhere in the wild -- but not from any of the populations for which comparative data is available."

Cengage, Bain, Apollo eye McGraw-Hill unit: sources

NEW YORK (Reuters) - McGraw-Hill Companies Inc's education unit is expected to draw final bids from private equity firms Bain Capital and Apollo Global Management as well as rival Cengage Learning Inc, in a deal that could fetch around $3 billion, several people familiar with the matter said.

Cengage, the No. 2 U.S. college textbook publisher, and the two private equity firms are working on final offers for McGraw-Hill Education, the world's second-largest education company by sales, with the bids due later in October, the people said.

McGraw-Hill, which is running the auction as an alternative to its planned spin-off of the business, wants to get more than $3 billion and could still decide against a sale if the bids fail to meet its price expectations, the people said this week.

Other private equity firms that submitted initial bids this summer, such as Thomas H. Lee Partners LP and Providence Equity Partners, dropped out because they felt the asking price was too high, according to the people familiar with the matter.

McGraw-Hill, Cengage, Apollo, THL and Providence declined to comment. Bain did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

McGraw-Hill Education, which had revenue of $2.3 billion and operating income of $260 million in 2011, distributes its textbooks in 65 languages across 157 countries. About 18 percent of the revenue is international, with digital-related solutions accounting for over 20 percent.

Cengage was acquired by Apax Partners LLP and OMERS Capital Partners from Thomson Reuters Corp , the parent company of Reuters News, for about $7.75 billion in cash in 2007.

The sale or spinoff of the education unit comes more than a year after minority shareholders JANA Partners LLC and the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan publicly urged McGraw-Hill to restructure.

McGraw-Hill, which has since streamlined its portfolio and made management changes, has said it would split into two publicly traded companies - McGraw-Hill Financial and McGraw-Hill Education.

The financial company will include credit ratings agency Standard & Poor's, S&P stock indexes, Platts commodity information and S&P Capital IQ. The company also accelerated stock buybacks and announced a drive to cut $100 million of annual costs from its nearly $5 billion of expenses.

Galaxy Note 2 for T-Mobile - Know Your Cell

We know that the Galaxy Note 2?is on all the major carriers so it will be interesting to see how these companies market it differently. After spending some time with the T-Mobile version, we think it will be pitched as a gaming machine.?

At the MobileCon show, we played with the Galaxy Note 2 and a gaming Bluetooth controller accessory. The Galaxy Note 2 fit neatly into a stand and you could then play games like Need for Speed, with physical controllers and buttons. It was smooth, responsive and a pretty good experience if you don't mind carrying around a bulky accessory.?

The Galaxy Note 2?for T-Mobile will be quite an impressive device, as even though it has a 5.5-inch display, it's still quite slim and manageable. The device will also be jam-packed with power including a 1.6 GHz quad-core processor, Wi-Fi, 2GB of RAM, NFC, GPS and microSD (up to 64GB).

We'll have a review of the Galaxy Note 2 as soon as we can but check out some of these other pictures and let us know what you think.?

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) ? One of the four gambling companies that have expressed an interest in building a casino in Springfield has opened an office in the city.

MGM Resorts International is the first of those companies to establish a physical presence in the city with the opening Tuesday of what it calls a community office on Main Street.

MGM in August unveiled its plans for an $800 million resort casino on 10 acres of land. The proposal includes a 250-room hotel, 89,000 square feet of gambling space and 70,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space.

Ameristar, Penn National and Hard Rock Entertainment have also expressed an interest in a casino in the city.

State law legalizing casino gambling allows up to three regional casinos, including one in western Massachusetts.

Did a meeting just don't feel like my heart is there. My mind drifts. Can't explain it. I'll be listening and I care but I drift away.i think insomnia and ADD (at my age) are still a problem. I did not talk that feels almost impossible to me bot I put ten bucks in the plate. Instead of the homeless today. Can't do everything.

I don't think you need to put that much in the basket Fitz...I do think if AA is the route you want to take....You should not only study the Big Book...You should do what is in it. Find a sponsor to take you through the steps...And find out what recovery is all about. I know it turned my life around.

I have a sponor and work hard just a drifting mind since I was a baby. Looking for a new sponsor this guy is kind of a dick. I have issues with AA but trying. I need the companionship. I gave that much because when I was in treatment for a month there I had nothing to give.

A day at a time. You are living your way into right thinking. Is your sponsor a dick or is he asking you to do things that you do not want to do?

A lot of people can't afford to put anything in Fitz...It ain't about the money....It's about getting better. If you don't like the sponsor you have...Find another one...It's all about moving forward.

It doesn't sound like you sleep well, so I'm not surprised you drift. But you may be hearing more than you think you are. I found that sometimes what was being said, even though I wasn't paying attention, somehow entered my head.

I know as Dee would say I'm too hard on myself. But I did it so that is a win. Noone wants me to serve coffee anymore but I'm better at not knocking down chairs. Just can't talk.

I used to continually 'drift' in AA, but it was due to the repetitive, depressing and boring drunkalogs, and the continual 'droning' of the self obsessed nuts. "Shut the f*ck up Frank, you're out to f*cking lunch"

I guess if all meetings were like that AA wouldn't work would it? I'm guessing you didn't try many different meetings or attend any Big Book or step meetings....I remember you from your thread entitled "8 Months Sober. Just Me, & Jack Trimpey. . ." Let me ask you an honest question....What is the deal with working that program?...Is putting down AA part of what makes it work? I'm serious....Can you explain that to me?

It happens...Some meetings I'm spaced too....That's life. It time you worked the steps Fitz. They read this it every meeting for a reason.

Rarely have we seen a person fail who has thoroughly followed our path. Those who do not recover are people who cannot or will not completely give themselves to this simple program, usually men and women who are constitutionally incapable of being honest with themselves. There are such unfortunates. They are not at fault; they seem to have been born that way. They are naturally incapable of grasping and developing a manner of living which demands rigorous honesty. Their chances are less than average. There are those, too, who suffer from grave emotional and mental disorders, but many of them do recover if they have the capacity to be honest.

Our stories disclose in a general way what we used to be like, what happened, and what we are like now. If you have decided you want what we have and are willing to go to any length to get it-then you are ready to take certain steps.

At some of these we balked. We thought we could find an easier, softer way. But we could not. With all the earnestness at our command, we beg of you to be fearless and thorough from the very start. Some of us have tried to hold on to our old ideas and the result was nil until we let go absolutely.

Remember that we deal with alcohol-cunning, baffling, powerful! Without help it is too much for us. But there is One who has all power-that One is God. May you find Him now!

Half measures availed us nothing. We stood at the turning point. We asked His protection and care with complete abandon.

Here are the steps we took, which are suggested as a program of recovery:

1.We admitted we were powerless over alcohol ? that our lives had become unmanageable.
2.Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
3.Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.
4.Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
5.Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
6.Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
7.Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
8.Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.
9.Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
10.Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.
11.Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
    12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

Many of us exclaimed, "What an order! I can't go through with it." Do not be discouraged. No one among us has been able to maintain anything like perfect adherence to these principles. We are not saints. The point is, that we are willing to grow along spiritual lines. The principles we have set down are guides to progress. We claim spiritual progress rather than spiritual perfection.

Our description of the alcoholic, the chapter to the agnostic, and our personal adventures before and after make clear three pertinent ideas:

    (a) That we were alcoholic and could not manage our own lives.
    (b) That probably no human power could have relieved our alcoholism.
    (c) That God could and would if He were sought.

AA has worked for millions and it has worked for many here. It has worked for me and it has worked for you. It has done nothing but grown for 80 years and will continue to grow 80 years from now. AA is a program of attraction not promotion, neither endorses or opposes any causes. Our primary purpose is to help alcoholics acheive sobriety.

It plain and simple would not still be here if it did not work. AA has taught me respentments have no place in recovery. I look for the good in people and things and embrace them. I take what I want and leave the rest. I have found a new freedom and a new happiness.

The same man/woman will drink again. The defination of insanity is doing the same things over and over but expecting different results.

It is only when we change do we get the desired results which are sobriety, happiness, and serenity
